Senior/Principal Power System Studies Engineer - (SOU00036C) Your Impact:
The energy industry, particularly transmission grids, is undergoing major transformations to accommodate for regional and global decarbonization and energy transition targets. The Jacobs Transmission and Distribution (T&D) team provides a wide range of services to major global and North American transmission and distribution clients ranging from major utilities to renewable energy developers. Our team has a strong focus on innovation and supporting industries and organisations driving the decarbonisation of our energy systems. So, we are looking for a Senior or Principal Power Systems Engineer to join our growing T&D team in North America. The successful candidate will effectively support our business by delivering high-quality work related to power systems studies as well as helping grow our overall business in this space. This will include system modelling and performing various power system studies for our major energy clients worldwide, including performing bulk transmission system planning studies (load flow/contingency analysis, short circuit, dynamics etc.). General knowledge of North American RTO/ISO requirements, transmission system planning and interconnection processes (FERC/NERC standards), as well as other bulk system requirements would be required to perform duties of this role. The ideal candidate should have a strong electrical/power systems background, a strong in-depth knowledge in technology (inverter-based resources), power system modelling and analysis, a methodical approach to problem solving and ability to utilise their skills to support growth in our business and our people. This position is flexible and can be remote anywhere in North America. However, preference would be given to candidate located in Toronto, Vancouver, or Dallas/Fort Worth US. The role of Senior/Principal Power Systems Engineer in our Energy & Power team in North America is one of the components of a growth strategy to position Jacobs as a leader in supporting our clients energy transition activities within North America as well as global. As part of our team, you’ll be providing a range of services throughout the Power System study projects, including power system modelling, feasibility studies, Grid Code compliance studies, grid interconnection/impact studies, Insulation Coordination, technical reports, technical bid preparation, attend the customer meetings etc. As this is a Senior/Principal role, you will also be required to lead the technical discipline at the senior level, delivering innovative solutions that provide superior value to our clients. The successful candidate will also be able to work collaboratively with our global power systems teams (primarily based in the UK and ANZ), as well as provide client focus and support, innovative solutions to clients most challenging problems, connect and nurture our technical resources.
• Transmission planning system studies including, but not limited to load flow/contingency analysis, generator injection analysis (network upgrades etc.), short circuit, VRT/FRT and dynamic studies.
• Other general electrical design studies including protection coordination, harmonics, grounding etc.
• Lead/support system studies project(s) throughout the whole lifecycle (i.e. from the technical bid/proposal to execution, reports, client meetings/presentations, to close-out)
• Contribute to the delivery of projects, delivering on time and to budget
• Ensure the studies/design meets all the applicable technical requirements
• Work closely with the team members across North America and globally.
• Work with different types of customers including renewable developers and RTOs/ISOs.
• Act as main point of contact and/or liaise directly with our clients, contractors, operators, and suppliers as necessary.
• Mentor and train other junior engineers/staff.
• Support the sales & management in client engagement and business development opportunities in pursuit of future work for the business
• Strong verbal and written communication skills combined, and quantitative and problem-solving skills are essential as part of this role.
• Jacobs have a strong ethos for safety in our BeyondZero approach, so you would be expected to have a positive attitude to health and safety, especially to eliminate or reduce the risk early in the design process.
• Substantial postgraduate years of related work experience in utility and/or renewable projects.
• Past experience performing transmission planning studies, injection studies, or similar based on a North American RTO/ISO requirements and interconnection processes (FERC/NERC standards) is a must. Examples (non-exhaustive): IESO, NYISO, ISO-NE, PJM, MISO, ERCOT, CAISO etc.
• Membership of a recognised professional association (IEEE or CIGRE) and recognition with PEng/PE or be able/willing to obtain.
• Advanced proficiency in power system modelling and analysis using PSS/E, ETAP and PSCAD.
• Strong communication skills to articulate a clear technical direction with good social, networking and presentation skills.
