The Role

As a Mechanical Engineer within Engineering Technical Assistance group, you will be part of the team that creates and executes revolutionary customer experiences around our products. You will work alongside the most creative and resourceful Designers and Engineers in the World, through all stages of the product design cycle. From system architecture definition at the Industrial Design and clay modeling phase, to prototype creation, production release, and post production continuous improvements. Commodities of focus can include all interior and exterior areas of the vehicle. You will develop these commodities as a modified scope Designer/Engineer - designing and delivering proposals based off DFM activities and required quality improvements for all post production systems and critical to quality pre-production systems.


• Develop first-principles driven architecture to optimize appearance, function, quality, cost and mass

• Iterate with the Tesla Studio and Vehicle Engineering to deliver the optimal experience while balancing form, function and quality

• Liaison to Studio and Vehicle Engineering teams for all cross functional design activities related to improvements proposed by the team.

• Design complex 3D surface models for structural components and hardware

• Orchestrate and execute proof of concept validation tests

• Utilize DFA methodologies during design, validation and launch of the program

• Manage/ collaborate with suppliers (both internal and external) to support prototype/production build events

• Knowing what and who your resources are and how to effectively utilize them

• Understanding how decisions in one area impact other departments and operational goals

• Meeting with smaller groups to make sure everyone is making progress against the plan and on a specific action

• Ensuring resources are allocated where needed

• Tracking details and managing actions to closure


• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

• Compelling evidence of exceptional ability (via face-to-face delivery of presentation materials)

• Optionally 2+ years experience working in Product Design/Engineering - automotive, hardware, or equivalent

• Demonstrate technical aptitude, creativity in design, and the ability to execute feasible solutions to complex engineering challenges

• Possess technical expertise of cutting edge manufacturing technologies

• Experience in design for six sigma (DFSS) during design, validation and/or launch of products

• Proficiency in 3D modeling utilizing CATIA V5/V6 or similar CAD software

• Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing principles of various commodities, including GD&T, assembly and dimensional engineering principles in design

• Experience with the development of specifications, DFMEAs, DVP&Rs and other technical documents
