Department Overview

The men and women of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

The Electric Transmission Design Engineering team is responsible for civil and electrical project engineering work; and civil and electrical design work for PG&E transmission lines. The team is responsible for the following:
- Engineering and design of Transmission line steel towers
- Engineering and design of Transmission line steel and other engineered material poles
- Engineering and design of non-standard wood pole transmission structures
- Engineering and design of structure foundations, site grading, and site improvements
- Engineering and design of overhead conductor lines and associated line equipment
- Engineering and design of underground cables, structures and appurtenances
- Engineering and design for compliance with industry recommendations, i.e. NERC
- Preparation and issuance of construction drawing packages and as-built prints
- Seismic retrofit of equipment
- Technical coordination with Substation engineering and design
- Technical consultation (project options); industry liaison (IEEE, equipment vendors, utilities)
- Project scoping; schedule development; preparation of detailed estimates and material lists
- Equipment specification; schedule vendor production slots; bundle bulk material for pricing advantages
- Construction support; training; follow-up; corrective action process
- Technical assistance on feasibility projects
- Manage contractors and evaluate performance

Position Summary

As a Design Engineer, you will be the vital link between the Company and widespread interconnection of generation, customer capacity (residential, commercial and industrial), and reliability improvements in California. Your role will be to ensure that the Company provides excellent service for these projects. This position is represented by Engineers Scientist of California (ESC) subject to collective bargaining.


- Valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain one by the first day of employment
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or its equivalent in education and experience, to include education and design drafting experience totaling six years, or education and experience totaling four years including two years at PG&E as a Design Drafter or Senior Design Drafter

- EIT/PE certification
- Familiarity with G.O 95, NESC, and PG&E transmission line standards and construction practices
- Familiarity and experience with Transmission Line Engineering tools, i.e. PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, etc.
- Ability to communicate project risks, issues and impacts as well as ability to propose mitigations
- Ability to manage schedule and personal resource allocation of multiple projects concurrently
- Ability to follow and forecast to resource loaded schedules for all projects
- Takes ownership of problems and their solutions.
- Ability to work with internal and external customers and suppliers
- Ability to understand and implement the technical requirements of interfacing engineering disciplines
- Demonstrates informed judgment when making decisions and recommendations
- Uses judgment in applying engineering principles and techniques to determine cost effective and practical solutions
- Interprets applicable codes, industry standards and regulations and educates others
- Provides thorough analysis of issues and justification of recommendations

- Prepare detailed construction drawings and packages for Transmission Line projects using PLS-CADD and MicroStation software.
- Design Transmission structures and foundations.
- Ensure Transmission Line infrastructure meets company and industry standards.
- Construction Support - Attend field meetings and provide on-site assistance to construction crews.
- Quality Control - Provide valuable input in evaluating and cross-checking peers and contractors.
