The Engineering & Science Services and Skills Augmentation (ESSSA) contract provides engineering, scientific and engineering technician support to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL. As an IMAGERY SYSTEMS ENGINEER the successful candidate will provide support specifically to the Space Launch System Engineering Imagery Team within the Space Systems Department at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). This role is a half-time position and will serve to coordinate multiple discipline engineers with a prime focus in the areas of SLS imagery needs, including onboard and ground systems.

Duties may include:

  • Assisting and/or leading system engineering efforts in the areas of requirements/verification with SLS Program Imagery System Requirements
  • Coordinating with prime users of the imagery, the image analysis and the prime contractors
  • Assisting with the technical feasibility assessments of both hardware and software and recommending design solutions when appropriate
  • Making technical risk mitigation/management inputs
  • Provide ground support planning to ensuring that quality data will be provided to all end users
  • Serve as a collaborative contributor to the technical review process.
  • Interfacing with Quality personnel to ensure the proper maintenance of documentation records
  • Providing periodic status inputs to project and Space Systems Department management

At least a BS degree from an ABET accredited institution in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field with a minimum of 20 years of related experience working with project/vehicle/subsystem integration, systems engineering, requirements definition, verification experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Required Skills for this position include:

  • Systems engineering skills and experience specifically related to the design, development, documentation and performance testing of flight subsystems
  • Extensive experience in the coordination and integration of mechanical, ground support systems, imagery, and quality.
  • Flexibility and the ability to complete tasks and formal assignments with minimal direction
  • Technical risk mitigation planning knowledge
  • Excellent communication, technical writing, presentation and customer relation skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro

Desired Skills for this position include:

  • Experience with Ares or SLS Program
  • An understanding of imagery systems and/or imagery analysis
  • Understanding/experience of contracting between NASA/MSFC and a prime contractor
  • Understanding of MSFC's processes and working within the NASA environment

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. This is a half-time position to support schedule milestones and technical demands of the job will need to be agreed upon. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
