An opportunity has arisen within the Design and Development Department of a global leading-edge manufacturer at their site near Woking for an experienced, technically competent Senior Research Design Engineer.

As a Senior Research Design Engineer you would be responsible for the optical aspects of new technologies, working within a medium-sized multidisciplinary Design & Development team. R&D is a core function of the company and one in which they invest significantly.

All of their world leading range of patented Opto-mechanical and Video products are created and prototyped within their Design and Development Department, using a suite of in house advanced Mechanical & Optical CAD software, development and rapid prototyping tools and a dedicated Toolroom.

This is a dynamic and creative organisation which values intellectual and engineering curiosity. The company operates a very flat hierarchy. For a person with the right attitude and capabilities, considerable independence and empowerment are offered. You will need to be a self-starter, with good communication skills so as to make best use of external technology developers (Universities, Research hubs, both UK and abroad).


Candidates will have a minimum of 5 years commercial experience in research & design of optical, optomechanical or video based products. Suitable previous experience for example, may include research & design of industrial optical products (In line inspection, code readers, laser systems), consumer optical products such as digital cameras and similar opto/telecoms equipment, copiers etc or laboratory optical products (microscopes, scanners).

Extensive experience of Optical Design Systems such as Zemax and/or3D CAD systems is essential.

You must have a degree in Optics or a related subject

Experience with related scientific software such as Mathematica and Mathcad would be beneficial


  • Up to £55,000 basic annual salary depending on the level of relevant experience and background. Some flexibility may be available for the ideal candidate.
  • Additional production bonus (payable monthly in arrears and averaging +4% of basic salary this current financial year) linked to the value of goods invoiced from the UK factory base. Plus healthcare, life cover, pension, free parking.
