Technical Accounting Project Manager
Position Summary
High potential professional role in Corporate Accounting Policy & Analysis group responsible for performing technical accounting research and accounting policy functions for a leading clean energy Fortune 200 company

Reports to: Manager, Accounting Policy & Research
Frequent interaction with Assistant Controller, Accounting Policy & Analysis, subsidiary controllers and Chief Accounting Officer

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Perform technical accounting research -- Act as a technical accounting advisor to teams evaluating complex transactions (including mergers and acquisitions, financing and equity transactions, structured energy commodity contracts, and the related income tax accounting effects) and new business opportunities. Research GAAP and SEC accounting rules, interpretive guidance, and accounting policy to form well-reasoned conclusions about the appropriate accounting treatment for transactions and document those conclusions in memos.
  2. Maintain a strong knowledge of accounting rules in assigned areas of expertise. Follow developments on new and emerging issues, keeping management informed of potential impacts to the Company's financial statements. Help formulate the Company's position with regard to rule proposals, drafting comment letters to the appropriate standard setters and participating in industry groups to develop positions on proposed changes of significance to the energy industry.
  3. Oversee implementation of new accounting standards across all NextEra Energy companies.
  4. Develop and maintain significant accounting policies, ensuring compliance with GAAP and SEC rules and consistency across NextEra Energy companies, where appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; Master's preferred
Certified Public Accountant - active license required

Knowledge and Experience
  • Extensive, current knowledge of GAAP required
  • Experience with consolidations, business combinations, derivatives and hedging, income taxes desirable
  • 6 years public accounting experience or combination of public accounting and industry experience required
  • Strong preference for candidate with experience in performing technical accounting research

Required Qualifications:
