What is NEOM?
Neom is an initiative of Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and forms part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan to diversify the country's economy to reduce its dependence on oil.
Led by the Public Investment Fund, NEOM is a place that prioritizes people and nature, creating a new model for sustainable living, working and prospering.
It is a place where humanity can progress without compromising the health of the planet.
What does NEOM mean?
The name NEOM is derived from two words. Envisioned by His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Company Board of Directors, the first three letters come from the Ancient Greek prefix neo – meaning 'new'. The 'M' is the first from 'Mustaqbal', an Arabic word meaning 'future'. The M is also the first letter of the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
Coming from the future, before it was even launched, this is how NEOM came about, and this is how its founder, His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, envisioned it, as he laid its foundations to be the future, an agent of progress and change.
It was therefore expected that “future” be intertwined with NEOM’s basic identity, its name, its values and its vision, and this is how NEOM is… from the future and to the future.
"If we are to solve the challenges of tomorrow, we must face up to them today, no matter how difficult they may seem. At NEOM, we are addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity by bringing together a community of the brightest minds committed to reimagining what a sustainable future will look like in 20 to 30 years, and building it today. We are redefining the future now. NEOM is open for business."
