Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is required to:
  • Must have ability to stand, walk on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, sit, squat, kneel, reach through low and high ranges and exhibit normal balance and coordination. These basic physical requirements are essential for safe performance of the job in harsh environments with exposure to very cold temperatures and while wearing arctic gear
  • Lift 40 lbs from floor to waist level x 2 with a 12 second interval
  • Lift 40 lbs from floor to shoulder level x 2 with a 12 second interval
  • Lift 40 lbs from floor to crown level x 2 with a 12 second interval
  • Repetitive lift of 40 lbs x 10 to shoulder level, self-paced but continuous, with 12 second intervals allowed between lifts
  • Carry 32 lbs with two hands for 150 feet, allow a 60 second rest break then lift and carry 50 lbs for 50 feet, self-paced but continuous
  • Shovel 5 minutes self-paced and continuous. *See shoveling test instructions at the end of the document
  • Stair Climb and Carry: While carrying 35 lbs with one hand and holding onto a railing with the other hand for safety, walk up and down 25 steps x 2 for a total of 50 steps, self-paced but continuous. Allow a 60 sec. rest break after climbing up and down 25 steps
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb up and down 12 rungs x 5 for a total of 60 rungs, self-paced but continuous. Allow a 60 second rest break after climbing up and down 30 rungs
  • Repetitive Kneel Test: Perform from standing, kneel on one knee, alternate from left to right knee x 5 each knee
  • Repetitive Stoop Test: Perform from standing position, bend forward at waist as far as possible without bending the knees with hands reaching toward the floor x 5, self-paced but continuous
  • Repetitive Squat Test: Perform a functional squat and stand x 5
  • Twist and Flex Test: Perform from standing alternate toe touches x 5 to each side to assess ability to twist and flex the trunk repetitively
Shovel Test:
  • The shoveling simulation is to be conducted for a test period of 5 five minutes, self-paced but continuous i.e., no rest breaks using a standard snow shovel with a 3 lb weight attached to the shovel blade, e.g. sand bag weight securely taped to the shovel blade.
  • The test recipient will be instructed to simulate lifting digging snow/gravel from floor level directly in front of the body the front center position and to lift the end of the weighted shovel to waist level when elbows are flexed 90 degrees.
  • Note: Instruct the test recipient when lowering the shovel to the floor to avoid fully bending at the waist with the legs straight i.e., to avoid fully flexing the lumbar spine. Instead, instruct the test recipient to bend the knees to lower the upper body i.e. assume a semi-squat position to avoid excessive flexion of the lumbar spine and strain on the lower back.
  • This is immediately followed by turning the entire body and shovel to the right or left to a full 90 degrees from the starting front center position to simulate moving the load to the side.
  • Note: Instruct the test recipient while performing the rotation of the body to 90 degrees to pivot the feet to follow the direction of the shovel to avoid unnecessary twisting of the lower back and emphasize that this is good body mechanics that will help avoid a back strain.
  • Once the test recipient has completed the rotation of the shovel blade at waist level to 90 degrees, the test recipient will reverse the rotation of the body and shovel back to the front center position i.e., the starting point of the shovel lift and lower the shovel back to the floor level directly in front of the body to simulate returning to shoveling again.
  • The next rotational lift is repeated again to the opposite side of the body. Therefore, the lift task is repeated by lifting and turning the shovel blade to the opposite side 90 degrees left and right on each repetition until the 5 minute period is completed.

The minimum qualifications for this position are:
