Job Description
The ambition of TOTAL Renewables is to become the global leader in the solar industry. The company has been involved in photovoltaic energy research since 1983, and leverages an original networked innovation model in order to develop technologies that will make a real difference in the near or mid-term future. The network includes a number of partnerships with leading academic labs and start-ups, such as the Belgium based Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (Imec), renowned for its cutting edge research in microelectronics and photovoltaics. The state-of-the-art infrastructure and capabilities of this partner are used to perform research on future solar cell generations.

Mission and responsibilities

Within Imec, TOTAL Renewables has set up a joint team of scientists specialized in advanced crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic technology. The team conducts innovative research on next generation high efficiency c-Si solar cells to further improve efficiency and reduce the cost of solar panels. The results developed by the team are used by TOTAL's most important industrial asset in solar energy, the California based SunPower Corporation, renowned for producing the world's most efficient and reliable solar panels.

For this R&D team, TOTAL Renewables is seeking a scientist who will contribute to our R&D activities on innovative concepts for c-Si solar cells. The work will focus on novel low-cost processing steps for the fabrication, characterization and module integration of advanced silicon solar cells. The candidate should have experience in multiple device fabrication steps. He or she will be an active member of a R&D team developing new process steps for the next generation of c-Si solar cells and collaborate actively with the research team of imec. She/he will be in charge of developing new processes, i.e. defining the experimental plan and performing the experiments as well as treating and interpreting the data. The candidate's research will be part of the long term R&D projects of TOTAL Renewables , and it will contribute to the design of the technology roadmap of TOTAL and its affiliates.

The principal responsibilities of the Scientist will be to:
  • Participate in the design and fabrication of c-Si solar cells with innovative processes
  • Design experiments, organize and execute device fabrication steps
  • Coordinate experiments in a joint research program with imec and internal activities
  • Characterize the materials and devices onsite and coordinate advanced characterization performed externally

  • Innovate and solve challenging technical problems with solution-oriented approaches
  • Assist in laboratory management activities such as calibrations, organization and others
  • Report regularly on the status of the activities in meetings or phone conferences

Profile sought
Educational background:
  • PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or other relevant field
  • Experience in solar cell processing
  • Experience in characterization of materials and devices
  • Knowledge of interconnection technologies is a plus but not mandatory
  • Hands-on laboratory skills
  • Ability to analyze data effectively and present data to different types of audiences
  • Fluency in English, orally and in writing
