ABB Corporate Research, in close collaboration with ABB business units, is developing the foundations for the next generation of ABB products. In Switzerland, ABB Corporate Research, located in the proximity of Zurich, employs more than 200 scientists from 35 countries with expertise in power technologies, automation and power electronics for manufacturing, consumer and process industries as well as utilities. In our Power and Energy Systems group, we are running a project which addresses the question of how new technology, policy, and business models will shape the electric power sector in the future based on real historical data, modeling and numerical simulations. We use a set of traditional power system analysis tools to demonstrate the impact of different scenarios on grids and the value of different technologies which enhance the grid flexibility and facilitate a proliferation of variable RES. In the content of this analysis, we offer an internship with a duration of 6 months starting in January 2017. Please note that the internship cannot be combined with an M.S. thesis.

Tasks:
- Data collection for regional scenario analysis
- Modeling of traditional and emerging technologies using ABB proprietary and commercial tools
- Developing, programming and maintaining new techno-economic analysis tools
- Documentation of results
- Conducting literature survey
- Independent execution of challenging research tasks under stimulating supervision

Requirements:
The candidate's application should clearly demonstrate her/his track record in at least one of the following:
- Power system steady- and dynamic-state modeling and analyses
- Power system optimal power flow and unit com-mitment (i.e. generation scheduling)
- The candidate is expected to have good experience in programming (in MATLAB, C, C++ or any other language) and to be familiar with at least one of the common educational or commercial software pack-ages in power system analysis such as Power-World, PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, ETAP etc.
- Strong analytical skills demonstrated with knowledge of mathematical modeling and statistics is a plus
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are a must
- The candidate is required to be enrolled at an M.S. program as a student during her/his internship (with official enrollment documents)
