Electrical Technician - Relay Field Testing & Commissioning
Job DescriptionJob Description
Relay Test Technicians specialize in testing, calibrating, and maintaining protective relays used in electrical power systems. Their job is to ensure these relays operate correctly under fault conditions to isolate issues and protect equipment and personnel.
This work includes:
- Commissioning and functional testing of protective relay schemes
- Performing end-to-end testing and fault simulations
- Reading and interpreting one-line diagrams and protection schematics
- Working in substations, switchyards, industrial facilities, and power plants
- Troubleshooting relay misoperations or system anomalies
- Using relay test equipment (Doble, Omicron, Megger, etc.)
- Collaborating with engineers, utility reps, and project managers to ensure systems are compliant and fully operational
Relay techs often hold NETA or NICET certifications and have a deep understanding of electrical protection systems across multiple voltage classes.
