SUMMARY:
Set up, operate, or tend machines to roll steel forming bends, beads, knurls, rolls, or plate, or to flatten, temper, or reduce gauge of material.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all inclusive):
· Monitor machine cycles to detect jamming and ensure that products conform to specifications.
· Adjust and correct machine set-ups to reduce thicknesses, reshape products, and eliminate product defects.
· Start operation of rolling machines to flatten, temper, form, and reduce sheet metal sections and produce formed products.
· Examine, inspect, and measure raw materials and finished products to verify conformance to specifications.
· Read rolling orders, blueprints, and mill schedules to determine setup specifications, work sequences, product dimensions, and installation procedures.
· Manipulate controls and observe dial indicators to monitor, adjust, and regulate speeds of machine mechanisms.
· Set distance points between rolls, guides, meters, and stops according to specifications.
· Calculate draft space and roll speed for each mill stand to plan rolling sequences and specified dimensions and tempers.
· Install equipment such as guides, guards, gears, cooling equipment, and rolls using hand tools.
· Position, align, and secure arbors, spindles, coils, mandrels, dies, and slitting knives.
· Perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all safety policies and rules.
· Other duties as assigned by the department supervisor and plant manager.
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
· High School Diploma or equivalent.
· Minimum three (3) years of machine operation experience in a manufacturing environment.
· Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
· Working knowledge of using micrometers and calipers.
· Critical-thinking skills, using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
· Ability to work independently and in a team setting as required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
· Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
· Ability to stoop, bend, reach, etc., as required by the position.
· Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds manually.
· Good manual dexterity, i.e., the ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· Ability to work in an environment which uses liquids and solutions needed in the scope of business (includes proper PPE usage).
· Exposure to hot and cold temperatures. Reasonable accommodations may be made as necessary.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to pass all pre-employment testing requirements, including drug test and background check.
