Kona Job Opportunity - Technical Engineer

An exciting opportunity for an experienced Technical Engineer to support the leadership team in developing a market leading portfolio of transmission connected BESS assets in the UK and the USA. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of engineering experience in the UK energy storage sector.

This is a unique opportunity for a motivated engineer to join a highly respected energy storage start-up beginning the next phase of its growth. The scope of the role will initially focus on transmission connections for projects in development, but will expand into technical and engineering support across the full project life cycle; including, procurement, compliance, construction and operations.

Main Responsibilities:

1. Performing transmission network analysis and interpreting power system studies to support the development team in scoping new opportunities

2. Actively engaging with TOs, DNOs, System operators and external consultants to evaluate grid connection availability

3. Working with OEMs to gather the information required for applications and project design

4. Leading the grid connection process for our portfolio of projects; following each project from development through to construction

5. Leading on the acceleration of grid connection dates through utilising excellent knowledge of the GB grid connection programme (and its proposed reforms), as well as the internal processes of NGET/DSOs

6. Supporting due diligence activities on acquisition opportunities by reviewing transmission and distribution grid connection applications/offers, construction plans, programme delivery and technical risk management

7. Providing input on site layout/design, BESS system procurement, EPC and OEM contracts from a commercial and technical perspective

8. Providing Technical input on optimisation contract negotiations and/or tendering processes for project specific revenues to ensure that that the BESS is optimised for services

9. Working with contractors to develop and implement commissioning/energisation plans for projects in construction

10. Managing NGESO and DNO Compliance processes and prepare necessary evidence; including commissioning/interpreting power system studies and code compliance for construction

The ideal candidate:

  • You are enthusiastic, curious and knowledgeable about electricity networks, power systems engineering and the BESS business model
  • You have a good understanding of the technical parameters and design specifications that enable projects to participate in markets/tenders for reactive power, grid stability, SCL/inertia and constraint management
  • You are a self-reflective team player that thrives in a high-paced and entrepreneurial environment
  • You have excellent communication skills and enjoy both upskilling and mentoring team members, whilst also learning from them
  • You are very organised and have experience spinning multiple plates at once
  • You have a hunger to grow both personally and professionally in the role

Essential Skills:

  • Degree or other relevant academic attainment/experience
  • Power system experience from a transmission, distribution, technical consultant or developer background
  • Experienced in working on development and delivery of battery projects in the UK
  • Astute commercial ability and strong understanding of the UK battery sector’s complexities, opportunities and barriers
  • Familiar co-ordinating with contractors throughout the project lifecycle to make sure that all technical needs and requirements are met
  • Excellent communication skills - you should be able to explain reactive power and short circuit level to a non-technical audience
  • Strong understanding electrical design from a practical perspective; experience working on primary system engineering would be useful
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and relevant programme management tools
