Position Summary: The IT Systems & Cloud Engineer at the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) will manage, secure, and optimize hybrid cloud and on-premises infrastructure, including server environments, virtual machines, M365/Entra ID, enterprise SaaS platforms, and cloud storage solutions. The role reports to the Deputy IT Director and partners with internal teams, external agencies, and vendors to ensure secure, scalable, and compliant technology solutions.
Location & Work Environment:
Hybrid role: onsite at WHS HQ in downtown Madison 1–3 days/week, remote work permitted after onboarding
Wisconsin or willing to relocate prior to start
Public parking, transit, and bike access available; commuting expenses not covered
Responsibilities:
Administer servers, virtual machines, and hybrid infrastructure to ensure reliability and data protection
Configure, monitor, and patch Windows Server, M365, and Entra ID environments
Develop and maintain automation scripts/workflows (PowerShell, CLI, or platform tools)
Integrate and manage hybrid and authentication systems (Entra ID, SSO)
Plan upgrades, migrations, and maintenance windows with minimal disruption
Maintain accurate documentation for systems and operational standards
Manage AWS and other cloud storage platforms, including lifecycle automation and integration with on-prem systems
Monitor cloud utilization, performance, and cost; recommend optimizations
Support deployment and configuration of new SaaS applications
Coordinate technology intake and vendor reviews, gathering use cases and requirements
Assess vendor documentation for privacy, security, and compliance
Partner with internal stakeholders and DOA to ensure adherence to policies and accessibility standards
Evaluate AI products for compliance, privacy, and security standards
Document technical details, approved use cases, and coordinate DOA governance review
Maintain inventory of approved AI applications and monitor for changes in terms or risk
Monitor infrastructure health using tools like Splunk, Tenable, or IronPort
Support vulnerability management and incident response activities
Translate technical information into actionable summaries for stakeholders and leadership
Support adherence to NIST, PCI DSS, and other relevant standards
Contribute to audit preparation and compliance reporting
Promote secure and efficient technology practices across IT and business units
Qualifications:
5+ years in system administration or cloud engineering in hybrid environments
Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Windows Server, and AWS storage services
Experience with automation, monitoring, or integration scripts (PowerShell, Python, or equivalent)
SaaS platform integration and SSO/IAM support experience
Knowledge of cloud lifecycle management, cost optimization, and hybrid storage automation
Familiarity with vulnerability management and SIEM tools (Tenable, Splunk, IronPort, Cloudflare)
Understanding of security best practices and compliance frameworks (NIST, PCI DSS, CIS, ISO 27001)
Strong documentation, communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills
Experience evaluating AI tools for compliance, privacy, or ethical risks
AWS S3 bucket management, lifecycle, IAM policies, billing, and advanced reporting
Supporting IT security reviews, exception workflows, or audit responses
Experience with multi-agency government IT environments
Relevant industry certifications (Microsoft, AWS, CompTIA, ISC2, ITIL)

Codeworks, LLC discloses that the anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $35 and $45. This range is subject to change based on job-related factors, including client requirements where applicable.
