Position Overview
The Crew Chief is responsible for leading a field survey crew in performing various types of surveys, including construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control surveys. This role involves overseeing field survey activities, ensuring the accuracy of data collected, maintaining field equipment, and integrating field data into finished maps and records. The Crew Chief acts as the senior field surveyor, providing guidance and training to crew members and ensuring that all survey activities adhere to safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Act as the Crew Chief for a field survey crew, managing and directing field survey operations for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects. Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, engineers, and contractor representatives.
- Gather field survey data using conventional and GPS methods. Set up, adjust, and operate surveying equipment, including electronic total stations, data collectors, and GPS equipment, to measure distances, elevations, and angles. Perform field surveying for roadway, bridge, and flood control projects.
- Maintain field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems.
- Perform the duties of the Crew Chief. Train and mentor other crew members, ensuring they are knowledgeable about the latest technology and methods in surveying.
- Assume responsibility for company survey equipment, overseeing maintenance and inventory. Set up, operate, and adjust all types of survey equipment, including levels, transits, and electronic measuring devices.
- Continuously seek new and innovative methods for conducting surveys. Train other crew members on the latest technology and equipment used in surveying.
- May perform mapping compliance or related office survey duties as a temporary assignment to satisfy the training/experience requirement for the Professional Land Surveyor's License.
Physical Demands
Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and rugged terrain. Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
Travel
Most assignments for this position will be done locally. However, assignments may occasionally be out of town and overnight travel could be required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in surveying, engineering, or a related field is .
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in surveying, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role as a Crew Chief or JR. Crew Chief.
- Proficiency in using surveying equipment (e.g., GPS, total station) and software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS). Strong mathematical and trigonometric calculation skills.
- Valid driver's license required.
