Responsibilities and Duties
- Fabrication and Assembly:
- Ship fitters lay out, cut, and shape metal plates, frames, and bulkheads according to blueprints and specifications.
- Welding and Riveting:
- They weld or rivet these metal components together, ensuring proper alignment and structural integrity.
- Blueprint Reading:
- Ship fitters must be proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and schematics to understand the design and construction requirements.
- Material Handling:
- They lift and position heavy metal parts, using hoists, jacks, and other tools, and secure them for welding or riveting.
- Quality Control:
- Ship fitters inspect their work to ensure it meets quality standards and make necessary adjustments or repairs.
- Safety Compliance:
- They adhere to safety regulations and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Repair and Maintenance:
- In addition to new construction, ship fitters also repair and maintain existing vessels, modifying structures and replacing damaged parts.
- Working at Heights:
- Ship fitters often work at significant heights, requiring them to be comfortable and safe in elevated positions.
Qualifications and Skills
- Welding and Metalworking:
- Ship fitters need strong skills in welding (including different techniques and positions) and metal fabrication.
- Blueprint Reading:
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints is essential.
- Tool Proficiency:
- They should be adept at using various tools, including cutting torches, grinders, drills, and measuring instruments.
- Physical Stamina:
- The job requires physical fitness, as electricians may need to work in various positions, including climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects, and working in confined spaces.
