Structural Engineer (Entry Level) in Warrensburg

Job DescriptionJob Description

Structural Engineer (Entry Level)

Remote (Kansas City area), Full-Time, $65,000 to $75,000 annually

Johnson Structural Inspections (JSI) is seeking a remote, entry-level Structural Engineer to perform structural analysis and design for new construction as well as existing residential and light commercial structures. This position is intended for a recent graduate or EIT-track candidate. This is a full-time, on-demand position with a flexible schedule, but assignments must be completed in a timely and professional manner to meet short turnaround times and client deadlines. The role is primarily remote, with occasional field travel for onsite forensic investigations and client meetings.

JSI provides structural design for new construction and enhances the structural performance of existing buildings through repairs, reinforcements, and code-compliant modifications, including foundation repair, load-bearing wall removal, retaining wall design, deck design, new structural framing and foundation design, and stabilization systems such as push piers, helical piles, and wall anchors. This role includes direct communication with clients, so the candidate must be able to explain engineering findings and repair approaches clearly to a non-technical audience. The ideal candidate is an excellent problem solver who is dependable and self-directed, able to follow direction and produce consistent, high-quality work with minimal oversight.

Benefits

• 100% employer-paid health insurance for the employee, with partial premium coverage for spouses and children.

• Dental and vision insurance.

• 401(k) with up to a 6% employer match.

• Paid holidays, PTO, and sick leave.

Requirements

• No prior engineering experience required. This is an entry-level position; on-the-job training on JSI's calculation methods and standard operating procedures is provided.

• Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university, or equivalent.

• EIT certification . The candidate is expected to work toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure while employed.

• Must be fluent in written and spoken English and authorized to work in the US.

• Must be familiar with the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), ASCE 7, TMS 402/602 (masonry), AISC 360 (steel), ACI 318 (concrete), AWC NDS (wood), and other relevant codes.

• Excellent problem solver, capable of applying fundamental engineering principles to unfamiliar or highly complex situations to reach a sound, defensible solution independently.

• Must reside in or near the Kansas City metropolitan area.

• Requires occasional travel, approximately 5-10%, for onsite forensic investigations and client meetings, generally without overnight stays.

• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

• Onsite field work may require accessing roofs, crawlspaces, attics, and other tight or physically demanding spaces.

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

• Occasional unusual work hours or extended days may be required to meet project deadlines.

• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to manage time and resources across multiple concurrent projects.

• Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing scope and deadlines in a fast-paced, short-turnaround environment.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain engineering findings and design decisions clearly to clients, contractors, and colleagues.

• Able to work independently and reliably to satisfy project deadlines without constant oversight.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design for new construction and existing buildings, including load path tracking, gravity loads, lateral loads, and soil loads.

• Design structural systems, including foundations, framing, and lateral systems, for new construction projects.

• Complete engineering calculations in accordance with JSI standard operating procedures to meet product specifications and applicable local building code requirements.

• Design repairs and reinforcements for existing structures in general, including foundations, load-bearing walls, retaining walls, decks, and stabilization systems (push piers, helical piles, wall anchors).

• Create construction drawings and details, including framing plans, connection details, and repair details, to support submittals.

• Review drawings and redlines for structural accuracy and code compliance prior to permit submittal.

• Coordinate with drafting and technician staff to communicate design intent and resolve field or drafting discrepancies.

• Document engineering reasoning and calculations in a clear, reproducible format to support QA/QC and permitting.

• Respond to plan-review comments from local jurisdictions and revise calculations or details as needed.

• Write forensic inspection reports documenting site observations and findings.

• Write repair design letters documenting structural analysis and repair approach for clients.

• Communicate directly with clients during site visits, calls, and meetings to discuss findings, scope, and project status.

• Other engineering-related tasks as assigned.

Daily workflow

This role operates on an on-demand basis with varying assignments depending on project needs. A typical workday may include:

• Performing or reviewing forensic field inspections.

• Running load path and capacity calculations.

• Drafting construction drawings and repair details.

• Reviewing and marking up drawing sets ahead of permit submittal.

• Coordinating with engineering technicians on redlines and drawing revisions.

• Responding to plan review comments from local jurisdictions.

• Communicating with clients by phone, email, or in person regarding findings and project status.

qualifications

• Coursework in structural and geotechnical engineering, including structural analysis, steel design, concrete design, wood design, lateral load systems, foundation design, retaining walls, and soil mechanics.

• or co-op experience in a civil or structural engineering setting.

• Comfortable explaining technical information to non-technical clients and contractors.

• Genuine interest in structural design and remediation work, including hands-on, field-informed problem solving.
