Position Description: Staff Scientist - Bioconjugation (Discovery Sciences Division – SCI 305)

The Staff Scientist - Bioconjugationwill serve as iQ Biosciences’ technical and scientific lead for bioconjugation services and product development. Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer and the Executive Committee, this individual will oversee end-to-end client engagements from scientific consultation and project execution to data delivery, while building scalable internal bioconjugation capabilities aligned with iQ’s new services and product development strategic portfolio.

Serving as the internal ADC expert and ensuring excellence in conjugation chemistry, analytics, and scientific integrity, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape iQ’s Bioconjugation group. The Staff Scientist will collaborate with internal teams across Commercial Operations, Laboratory Operations, and Project Management to design efficient workflows, develop retail-ready conjugate products and new service offerings, and mentor emerging scientists. Externally, this individual will serve as the primary representative to current and prospective bioconjugation clients, proactively strengthening relationships, promoting iQ’s capabilities, and contributing to business growth. Success in this role requires anticipating challenges, developing practical solutions, and maintaining a balance between operational efficiency and adaptive, timely execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Scientific and Technical

  • Lead the design, development, optimization, and execution of bioconjugation workflows to ensure seamless end-to-end delivery of high-quality bioconjugates.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and optimize conjugation methods, bioanalytical workflows, and purification processes for bioconjugates.
  • Lead process improvement for purification and buffer exchange (TFF, Protein A, desalting), ensuring scalability for mg–g scale production.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records, analyses, and results in compliance with iQ Biosciences’ standards.
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for relevant workflows and methods.
  • Summarize experimental findings in PowerPoint presentations, technical reports, patent applications, and regulatory submissions as needed.
  • Provide training and technical support to team members on bioconjugation techniques and instrument operation.
  • Communicate with external service providing vendors for outsourced projects related to chemical synthesis or protein expression.
  • Stay current with advances in the field through literature review.
  • Participate in internal R&D projects and scientific conferences as needed.

Operational & Business

  • Lead the scientific components of client introduction calls and data review meetings; communicate directly with clients via video conference and email to coordinate studies, provide updates, and deliver data summaries.
  • Collaborate across internal functions to present scientific results, coordinate project activities, and ensure effective communication across teams.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to manage resource allocation, project planning, timeline tracking, and client deliverables for the Bioconjugation team.
  • Utilize project management (Zoho) and inventory (LIMS) systems to track progress and maintain accuracy.
  • Support the recruitment, evaluation, training, goal setting, and professional development of new Bioconjugation team members.
  • Communicate with external vendors to troubleshoot reagents and equipment issues and obtain quotes as needed.

Required:

  • Ph.D. (5+ years), M.S. (8+ years), or B.S. (10+ years) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or related discipline, with emphasis in multi-step synthesis and bioconjugation applications.
  • Deep technical expertise in protein chemistry and bioconjugation, including the design, synthesis, and purification of protein bioconjugates and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).
  • Proficient in ADC characterization techniques such as SEC, HIC, RPLC, and high-resolution mass spectrometry for bioconjugates assessment.
  • Experienced with AKTA purification system with CEX, IEX, SEC, and HIC purification methods.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary scientific teams and manage multiple concurrent projects within CRO, biotech, or pharma settings.
  • Effective collaborator across enterprise functions such as Commercial Operations, Laboratory Operations, Project Management, and R&D.
  • Excellent and proactive written and verbal communicator who can translate complex conjugation chemistry into clear technical updates for clients and internal cross-functional teams, demonstrate strong scientific presentation ability, and with mentoring success guiding scientific staff.
  • Track record of scientific accomplishment and leadership in the biologics field, supported by publications, patents, or successful advancement of therapeutic candidates.
  • Experienced in optimizing workflows, streamlining operations, and improving efficiency through process innovation.
  • Broad understanding of therapeutic modalities including small molecules and biologics, with experience contributing to R&D portfolio planning.
  • High level of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.

:

  • Strong foundation in multi-step organic synthesis and modern synthetic methodologies with working knowledge of linker-payload chemistry, including cleavable mechanisms (e.g., β-glu, val-cit, disulfide) and self-immolative spacers; experience evaluating new payloads for stability, solubility, and release behavior.

General:

  • Full-time, exempt position, not subject to FLSA or California overtime regulations.
  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Occasional night and/or weekend work may be required.
  • This is a 100% on-site lab-based position located in Alameda, CA, with occasional travel as needed.
  • Starting range $116,000 to $132,000, based on experience. Full position range $116,000 to $190,000.*

* Starting range is what iQ will pay someone starting in this role. Full range includes the minimum and maximum for this title, allowing for potential performance-based increases over time.
