SR Process Engineer

Position Summary:

The Senior Process is responsible for mentoring early technical personnel in the Engineering Department while serving as the primary process engineering leader for the organization. In addition to providing technical leadership, this role will be responsible for performing engineering studies, process design, the ability to troubleshoot process systems to improve PSM/safety, throughput, efficiencies, quality, environmental compliance, reliability, costs, lead capital projects, and provide operations support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • This position is responsible for key Process Safety Management (PSM) program elements, process safety and improvement, process development, and technical assistance to operations to improve safety, productivity, and uptime.
  • Serve as a PSM Element Leader for Process Safety Information (PSI), Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) and support the Management of Change [MOC-Technology] Element, including RAGAGEP and the ability to lead 5-Year Cyclical and Capital Project PHAs.
  • Guardianship of the process includes developing all aspects of the process, including chemistry, raw materials, materials of construction, safety procedures, environmental and waste minimization considerations, engineering controls, operating conditions, quality, and economics.
  • Initiates MOC Changes of Design (COD) to the process to improve the safety, quality, environment, and/or cost of the production unit.
  • Perform experimental operating instructions (EOI's) and Test Authorizations (TAs) on the process to improve the safety, quality, environment, and/or cost of the production unit.
  • Interface with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Capital, Safety and Environmental to identify and implement best practices to improve production rate, quality, plant reliability and EHS performance.
  • Lead small capital projects and serve as the process lead for major capital projects.
  • Provide basic data, feasibility, cost benefit analysis and budget for capital project front-end loading to ensure equipment is designed and specified correctly and meets process requirements at the highest uptime and lowest life cycle cost.
  • Provide process support to the operating areas, oversee equipment installations, commissioning procedures, and process startups for new or modified facilities.
  • Expert troubleshooting skills: the ability to analyze plant operations and data; apply process knowledge and identify root causes to various operational issues.
  • Recognize when the process is not in control and understand steps needed to address recovery steps.
  • Oversee the Standard Operating Condition (SOCs) tables in the operating procedures.
  • Evaluate process data on yield, utility, quality, continuously identify opportunities and implement solutions for technology improvements.
  • Develop key performance indicators (KPI's) and lead engineering results to meet/exceed the KPI's
  • Document new and existing technology in technical standards, specifications, and operating procedures. This would include equipment files and process drawing updates.
  • Specifying, documenting, and maintaining technology parameters to ensure the process safely delivers product at the level of the quality required by the final customer.
  • Assist Operations and Maintenance with troubleshooting equipment failures and root cause analysis.
  • Provide shift/weekend coverage for unit or capital project start-ups, tests, annual Turnarounds, or other non-routine needs.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of industrial experience in highly hazardous chemical processes, with progressively more responsible positions in chemical manufacturing operations
  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering .
  • Strong analytical and process problem solving skills.
  • Fundamental understanding of all PSM Elements.
  • Experience in granulated fertilizers manufacturing facilities is a plus.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and teamwork abilities.
  • Self-motivated leader that is proactive with a strong sense of urgency toward improvement
  • A hands-on visible engineer that seeks engagement and involvement with operators and mechanics on a daily basis
  • Results driven - - Routinely uses goals, objectives, and metrics to achieve results.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Regular exposure to chemical substances and lab equipment.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including lab coats, gloves, and safety glasses.
  • Standing, walking, and manual dexterity required for extended periods.
  • Occasionally required to lift containers up to 50 pounds.
