JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB GOAL:

To provide a comprehensive program for students who are referred to the speech/language impaired program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in Speech-Language Impaired from an accredited educational institution and Certification in Speech/Language Pathology and/or licensure in Speech/Language Pathology by the State of Florida, Department of Professional Regulations,

OR

A Bachelor's degree in Speech Language Impaired or Speech Pathology and official verification of admission to a master's level program in Speech-Language Impaired at an accredited institution which are two of the qualifications for a 5-year Non-Renewable Professional Certificate,

OR

A Bachelor's degree major in Speech-Language impaired (other acceptable majors include Communication Disorders, Speech and Hearing Science, Speech Therapy, Speech Pathology, Speech Correction, Speech Pathology and Audiology). The Florida Statutes only provide for one two-year Temporary Certificate which may not be extended or reissued under any circumstances. Employee must sign an agreement that at the end of year two, employment will be terminated unless he or she has provided an official verification for admission in a master's program in Speech-Language Impaired at an accredited institution which is one of the qualifications for a 5-year Non-Renewable Professional Certificate. The agreement must be placed in the Personnel File and noted in the Personnel Action Form.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge about assessment and remediation of speech / language impairments. Knowledge of federal, state and District guidelines as it relates to implementation of the speech/language impaired program. Ability to function as a member of the educational team and a strong desire to work with children. Ability to organize and prioritize activities. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of techniques and instruments used to diagnose speech/language impairments. Knowledge and understanding of assigned areas speech/language pathology.

SUPERVISES:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establish short- and long-range plans based on student needs and consistent with District and state requirements.

Select materials to support learning objectives and meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and special needs.

Plan a therapy program for eligible students, including implementation and annual review of the Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Participate in school-level intensive support teams as appropriate.

Provide statistical information for program planning, such as FTE information, severity rating data, end-of-year reports, matriculation reports, screening results and other relevant data.

Schedule students for speech/language impaired program taking into account the total educational setting.

Order materials and supplies for program implementation as required

Maintain a positive, organized and safe learning environment.

Manage time, materials and equipment effectively.

Establish and maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures for attendance and progress including requirements for Medicaid.

Identify students who have speech and/or language impairments through screening and/or diagnostic assessments.

Determine eligibility for speech/language impaired program.

Analyze/interpret results of screening or diagnostic assessment.

Conduct a therapy program for eligible students, including implementation and annual review of the Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Use appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet students' needs.

Use strategies appropriate for working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively involved in the learning process.

Recognize overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral or reporting action.

Conduct hearing screenings for students referred by the nurse.

Consult with parents, teachers, principals and others as appropriate, concerning general guidelines of speech and language development and specifically about students enrolled in the program.

Interpret educational policies, programs and procedures relative to the speech/language program as required.

Provide information and/or inservice to teachers, administrators and other school staff.

Engage in continuing improvement of professional knowledge and skills.

Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.

Follow attendance, punctuality and proper dress rules.

Maintain confidentiality regarding school matters.

Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents and other professionals.

Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.

Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.

Follow all School Board policies, rules and regulations.

Demonstrate support for the School district and its goals and priorities.

Perform other incidental tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

May provide clinical supervision for students and other staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
