Role Overview

The Software Design Engineer will play a key role in designing, developing, and implementing software solutions that support automation, operating technology, and digital transformation initiatives across Eurogate’s German terminals. The role requires deep technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and experience with complex, mission-critical systems. Experience in container terminal operations is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement software systems for operating technology, automation, and asset management.
• Collaborate with engineering, IT, and operations teams to deliver solutions tailored to terminal requirements.
• Develop and integrate applications, APIs, and control systems supporting container handling, yard management, and logistics processes.
• Support the development and deployment of automation and digitalization initiatives (e.g., automated guided vehicles, crane automation, digital twins).
• Perform software architecture design, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.
• Integrate software solutions with SCADA, PLCs, and industrial control systems.
• Ensure cybersecurity compliance and reliability of mission-critical systems.
• Participate in the full software lifecycle, from concept through delivery and ongoing optimization.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring for junior engineers and developers.
• Evaluate and adopt new technologies to improve system performance, resilience, and scalability.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years’ professional experience in software engineering, operating technology, and automation systems.
• Proven track record in designing and implementing software for mission-critical, industrial, or logistics applications.
• Strong knowledge of programming (e.g., Java, C++, Python, C#) and modern development frameworks.
• Experience with industrial automation, SCADA/PLC integration, and control systems.
• Familiarity with container terminal operations or heavy industry logistics systems is highly desirable.
• Proficiency in database management, APIs, and integration platforms.
• Strong knowledge of cybersecurity practices for industrial/operational environments.
• Excellent communication skills in English (German a strong advantage).
• Demonstrated ability to lead projects, manage stakeholders, and deliver solutions on time.

Skills

• Experience in real-time systems and distributed architectures.
• Knowledge of IoT platforms, machine learning applications, or predictive analytics.
• Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure and containerized applications (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Understanding of sustainability-driven digital solutions in logistics and port operations.

Salary guide is 80-100K Euros
