The Shelter Safety and Facilities Coordinator is a key member of the shelter operations team, responsible for maintaining a calm, safe, and supportive environment at our shelter. This position is consistently present on the shelter floor and surrounding grounds to proactively identify and address safety concerns, support guests in navigating communal living, and assist in preventing and de-escalating conflicts. The Coordinator works in close coordination with shelter staff and reports directly to the Safety and Facilities Manager. Core Responsibilities1. Proactive Safety Monitoring
- Maintain a visible and consistent presence throughout the shelter and surrounding property to support safety and positive engagement.
- Conduct frequent walkthroughs to identify and address emerging tensions, unsafe behaviors, or environmental risks before they escalate.
- Build rapport with guests through regular, respectful, and non-confrontational interactions that promote a culture of trust and mutual respect.
2. Conflict Prevention & De-escalation
- Use trauma-informed, person-centered techniques to recognize early signs of distress, agitation, or potential conflict.
- Intervene early using verbal de-escalation and calming strategies to reduce the likelihood of disruptive or harmful incidents.
- Assist in the mediation of interpersonal issues among guests when appropriate, ensuring all interventions are respectful and culturally responsive.
3. Shelter Staff & Guest Support
- Serve as an additional layer of support to shelter staff by helping maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all.
- Provide real-time assistance during incidents or behavioral health concerns in collaboration with case management or behavioral health staff.
- Support shelter operations during high-traffic times (e.g., mealtimes, curfews) to help manage flow and reduce stress in communal areas.
4. Incident Response & Communication
- Respond appropriately and safely to behavioral health crises, facility emergencies, or urgent safety concerns, following established protocols.
- Collaborate with the Safety and Facilities Manager and other staff to coordinate responses and communicate key information across shifts.
- Contact emergency services when necessary and provide clear, accurate information to responders.
5. Reporting & Documentation
- Complete incident reports, shift notes, and safety logs in a timely and professional manner.
- Communicate relevant observations or concerns to the Safety and Facilities Manager and case management team to support wraparound care.
- Monitor and report any maintenance or facility-related safety hazards for timely resolution.
Supervision and Reporting
- This position reports directly to the Safety and Facilities Manager.
- Join safety team meetings, training, and individual supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in safety, crisis response, shelter services, or related community-based work.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage respectfully with individuals in crisis or experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.
- Training or experience in de-escalation, trauma-informed care, or harm reduction strongly encouraged.
- Comfortable working on their feet for extended periods and navigating both indoor and outdoor shelter environments.
- CPR Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
