What you’ll be\ndoing:

You will conduct\nradiological safety assessments and evaluate radiation damage risks\nto onboard electronics. Your role involves developing radiation\ndetection systems and managing the systems engineering\ndesign of secondary shielding. Utilising point kernel and Monte\nCarlo calculations, you will support radiation transport modelling\nand provide technical guidance on design changes or defects to\nmaintain safety standards. Additionally, you will develop ALARP\njustifications to support engineering decisions, ensuring all\nradiological risks are minimised to compliant and acceptable\nlevels.

Core\nduties:

  • You’ll hold a\ndegree in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Nuclear\nScience, or a related field
  • You’ll possess\ndemonstrable knowledge/experience of radiation physics, nuclear\nengineering, nuclear safety or similar
  • You’ll\nhave knowledge/experience of Radiological safety assessments, ALARP\njustifications or similar
  • You’ll utilise your\nknowledge/experience of radiation transport methods\n(ATTILLA/MCBEND/MCNP etc.)

The Radiation Physics & Shielding\nteam:

Our team designs and\nvalidates radiation shielding for the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet\nacross three major programmes. We handle shield design, build\nassessments, metrology, and safety studies, while developing novel\ndetectors and electronics capability. We offer relocation support\npackages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting\neligibility criteria.
