Senior Mechanical Engineer in Orlando

Job DescriptionJob Description

Position Overview

Tews Company is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in commercial product design, particularly for environments where form, usability, and visual appeal are as critical as function.

This role is ideal for an engineer who can bridge mechanical engineering and industrial design principles, creating products that not only perform reliably but also meet the expectations of end users in clinical or professional settings.

The right candidate will have experience designing customer-facing hardware products—not just internally housed systems—and will bring a refined understanding of modern product aesthetics, ergonomics, and usability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end mechanical design of new products and design enhancements
  • Develop enclosures and assemblies for electronic and electromechanical systems
  • Translate complex technical requirements into intuitive, user-friendly product designs
  • Ensure products balance functionality, manufacturability, and visual appeal
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) from concept through production
  • Manage and execute Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and configuration management activities
  • Assess design changes for impact on product performance, safety, and compliance
  • Support supplier development and ensure manufacturable, scalable designs
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design and change management processes

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
(or 5–10 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree)
  • 5–10+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with a strong emphasis on commercial product development

Technical Expertise:

  • Proven experience designing products used by end users (e.g., commercial, healthcare, or consumer-facing equipment)
  • Strong understanding of product form, ergonomics, and visual design considerations
  • Experience with:
    • Electrical/electronic enclosure design
    • Plastic injection molded components
    • Metal castings and machining processes
    • Gear trains, bearings, and motion systems
    • Thermal analysis of electronic assemblies
  • Proficiency in CAD tools and PLM systems
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems and Microsoft Office tools

Regulatory & Quality Systems:

  • Experience working within regulated quality systems (e.g., ISO 13485, ISO 9000, or similar)
  • Familiarity with design controls, risk management, and change impact assessment
  • Understanding of product risk frameworks (e.g., ISO 14971 or equivalent)

Background

  • Experience designing products that integrate electronics, sensors, or signal-based technologies (e.g., RF, IoT, embedded systems)
  • Exposure to biometric or sensor-based systems (e.g., ECG, CO2, SpO2, heart rate monitoring)
  • Background in industries where precision, reliability, and user interaction intersect
  • Military or aerospace experience is acceptable only if complemented by commercial product design experience

What Sets This Role Apart

This is not a role focused solely on internal mechanical systems or ruggedized hardware. Success in this position requires the ability to design products that:

  • Are visually modern and intuitive
  • Feel appropriate for professional, user-facing environments
  • Balance engineering precision with thoughtful product design

Candidates who have primarily worked on enclosed or non-user-facing hardware (e.g., aerospace or defense systems) without exposure to product aesthetics and usability will not be the right fit.

Key Traits for Success

  • Strong design judgment with an eye for clean, modern product aesthetics
  • Ability to think beyond function and consider the end-user experience
  • High attention to detail in both engineering performance and product presentation
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
