Senior Scientist – Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Mass Spectrometry

Full-time, On-site – Southampton
We’re partnering with an innovative scientific organisation to find an experienced Senior Scientist with deep expertise in Mass Spectrometry to join a high-performing team based in Southampton. This role offers the chance to lead analytical strategies, contribute to cutting-edge projects, and support the development of high-quality modified nucleic acid in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
About the Role
As the subject matter expert in mass spectrometry, you’ll play a central role in driving analytical method development, ensuring high standards in nucleic acid production, and mentoring junior team members. This is a hands-on role in a modern laboratory, where scientific excellence and operational efficiency go hand-in-hand.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage analytical workflows using LC-MS, UPLC-MS, HPLC, PAGE, and flash chromatography
Act as the go-to expert for mass spectrometry, including troubleshooting and continuous improvement
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support small molecule preparation and oligonucleotide synthesis
Maintain, calibrate, and optimise analytical instrumentation in line with internal and ISO quality standards
Support and mentor Associate Scientists and Lab Technicians, providing technical guidance and training
Ensure high levels of documentation accuracy and data integrity
Uphold Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards and promote a safety-first culture
Manage the inventory of analytical reagents and consumables
Stay informed on emerging techniques in nucleic acid chemistry and analytical science
About You
We’re looking for a driven and detail-focused scientist who thrives in a collaborative lab environment and is passionate about pushing the boundaries of analytical science.
You’ll ideally have:
PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field
Significant hands-on experience with Mass Spectrometry, ideally including Waters LC-MS systems (Waters Connect experience highly desirable)
Proven track record in high-throughput chemistry or oligonucleotide production environments
Strong grounding in nucleic acid chemistry and experience with purification techniques
Experience working in ISO or GMP-regulated environments
Ability to lead projects and mentor junior staff
Excellent communication, problem-solving and organisational skills
A proactive mindset, able to adapt and perform under pressure
Salary & Benefits
Salary: Up to £45,000 depending on experience
Location: On-site in Southampton
