Job Summary/Objective/Role: Under the general direction of the Engineering Manager and Project Managers, the Senior Controls Engineer serves as a member of a cross-functional project team or independently as a creator of processes, procedures, and IP. As a member of a cross-functional project team, the role has responsibility to independently execute any task type and project initiatives, or direct others on execution of tasks.

Responsibilities: This position is responsible for the lead engineering, design, integration, programming, and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), control instrumentation/components, and Industrial Networks for systems to support productivity and/or quality improvements for our clients. The position has responsibility for determining operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions. Will prepare, review and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming. Additional responsibilities include participating in process improvement teams, training Level 1&2 Controls Engineers, advising PMs on best project execution plans, and main project lead on technical initiatives.

Requirements:

1. Four-year bachelor’s degree in an accredited engineering discipline or equivalent experience.

2. Minimum 7 years of experience as a Controls Engineer Level 2 or equivalent experience.

3. Satisfactorily completed all requirements of Control Engineer Level 2.

4. Achievement of this level must be initiated through a recommendation made by either a team leader or supervisor, completion of the application process, and be approved by

management.

5. Travel required.

Essential Functions:

1. Evaluate, analyze, and troubleshoot existing automation and control systems.

2. Interpret detailed specifications for automation and control systems.

3. System Design: Research, understand, and specify/apply commercially available control hardware and instrumentation.

4. System Design: Ability to evaluate and select control system strategies to meet clients’ needs. This involves matching technology to project needs and existing plant systems.

5. Advise other engineers and equipment suppliers to ensure design intent and cost effectiveness of delivery are achieved.

6. Develops and supervises others on creation of detailed system documentation for the construction and installation of key system equipment.

a. Understand fundamentals of electrical drawing sets and demonstrate proficiency in reviewing and completing drawing markups.

b. Create project documentation (IO lists, RAILs, FATs/SATs, SOWs, FDS, etc.)

c. Write operations manuals.

d. Advise on equipment and system submittal efforts.

7. PLC and HMI programming:

a. Proficiency with multiple control system (PLC) platforms.

b. Proficiency with multiple supervisory (HMI/SCADA) packages, both general graphics/interface and advanced software capabilities.

8. Advise/Train others on configuration/startup of industrial control equipment to include:

a. Drives and/or servos

b. Variety of instrumentation

9. Demonstrate strong understanding with Ethernet Network design and deployment including hardware, software, and security.

10. On-site direction and support for design reviews, consultancy, installation, start-up, and troubleshooting.

11. Provide remote assistance for client with technical support to meet lead time and quality of client‘s requests.

12. Executes functional tests after automation equipment is completed to ensure quality.

13. Completes and leads team on startup verifications (FAT/SAT documentation).

14. Provide training to others on all technical aspects.

15. Demonstrates leadership and mentors other team members.

16. Suggests future standards and process improvements for the department.

Physical Demands: Must possess ability to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to visit various client and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Finger dexterity needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard and to operate standard office equipment. This is primarily a sedentary office classification although prolonged standing and walking and the ability to climb ramps, stairs, and ladders may be required when traveling or on client site. May occasionally require the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 40 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
