Job Description

About the Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Bioinformatics team, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and optimizing scalable software systems that power Guardant’s clinical laboratories and data platforms. Your contributions will have a direct impact on identifying treatment options for cancer patients based on genomic data derived from a simple blood draw. 
 
You will lead and influence technical direction, mentor junior engineers, and work collaboratively with scientists, product managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver robust, secure, and compliant software solutions at scale. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and development of large-scale software systems and infrastructure that process and manage massive genomic datasets. 

• Drive architectural decisions and advocate for best practices in software engineering, scalability, performance, and maintainability. 

• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and refine complex requirements, translating them into detailed, scalable software designs. 

• Deliver features end-to-end, from intuitive user interfaces to efficient, secure backend systems and data persistence layers. 

• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing. 

• Own and improve build, release, and continuous integration pipelines, ensuring quality and regulatory compliance. 

• Guide software design and delivery in an agile development environment, including testing, documentation, deployment, and operational readiness. 

• Evaluate and incorporate new technologies, frameworks, and tools to advance team capabilities. 

• Lead initiatives for operational excellence, monitoring, and incident response for deployed applications. 

Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related technical field. 

• 5+ years of professional experience in web application development, software architecture, and infrastructure at scale. 

• Demonstrated expertise in object-oriented programming and software design principles in production environments. 

• Advanced proficiency in Python and JavaScript, including modern frameworks like Django and React. 

• Experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs at production scale. 

• Strong database skills, with experience in schema design, optimization, and queries using PostgreSQL or equivalent RDBMS. 

• Deep understanding of front-end technologies (HTML5, CSS3) and state management with Redux or similar. 

• Production experience with containerized environments, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines. 

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS ) and Infrastructure-as-Code practices. 

• Experience with software development in regulated environments (e.g., IVD, CLIA) is a strong plus. 

• Knowledge of automated testing strategies and deployment practices in compliance-heavy settings. 

• Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and leading projects or initiatives. 

Additional Information

Hybrid Work Model: At Guardant Health, we have defined days for in-person/onsite collaboration and work-from-home days for individual-focused time. All U.S. employees who live within 50 miles of a Guardant facility will be required to be onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We have found aligning our scheduled in-office days allows our teams to do the best work and creates the focused thinking time our innovative work requires. At Guardant, our work model has created flexibility for better work-life balance while keeping teams connected to advance our science for our patients.

 The base salary range for this full-time position is $115,600 to $158,950. The range does not include benefits, and if applicable, bonus, commission, or equity.

Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. If you are selected to move forward, the recruiting team will provide details specific to the factors above.

Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
