Senior Asset Engineer – Building Surveyor

Lead the Team That Keeps Britain’s Railway Safe

At Network Rail, our buildings are more than structures—they’re critical assets that protect the railway and millions of passengers every day. As a Senior Asset Engineer – Building Surveyor, you’ll take on a leadership position, guiding a team of surveyors and ensuring our building assets remain safe, compliant, and fit for the future.

About The Role (External)

The Role

You’ll manage 3–4 surveyors, providing technical leadership and strategic direction. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Inspecting and assessing building structures, including (but not limited to) loft spaces, platforms, footbridges and train sheds.
  • Identifying and diagnosing defects such as damp, structural weaknesses, and potential safety-critical issues.
  • Applying building regulations and compliance standards to all works.
  • Developing and approving maintenance and renewal plans, aligned with Network Rail’s objectives.
  • Collaborating with contractors and suppliers, using precise technical terminology to ensure clarity.
  • Driving continuous improvement through risk assessments, data analysis, and incident investigations.

About You

You’re an experienced building surveyor with strong technical knowledge and proven leadership skills. You’ll bring:

  • Professional qualifications in building surveying or a related discipline.
  • Chartered status (or equivalent) and deep knowledge of building regulations.
  • Expertise in diagnosing and treating damp, assessing buildings, including loft spaces and managing building fabric defects.
  • Strong understanding of industry standards, asset management principles, and safety-critical risk assessment.
  • Excellent communication skills to lead your team and liaise effectively with contractors and suppliers.

Your ability to combine technical precision with strategic thinking will make you a trusted leader in our Asset Management team.

Salary: £55,596 - £65.966 plus £3,270 London Office Location Allowance
