Location: Evanston, On-Site Position

The Evanston Public Library is seeking an experienced Safety Supervisor/Assistant Facilities Manager to lead with confidence, compassion, and professionalism. In this pivotal role, you will oversee the Library's Safety Team, ensuring a welcoming and secure environment for all who use our spaces. This uniquely blended position combines strong supervisory leadership with hands-on presence across our facilities, requiring a balance of operational oversight, staff development, and community engagement. While not directly responsible for building maintenance functions, this position plays a vital role in coordinating with Facilities to keep spaces safe, accessible, and ready for use. You will mentor and train Safety Monitors, model emotional intelligence in navigating challenging situations, and coordinate with custodial staff to keep our facilities safe, functional, and accessible. Success in this role demands excellent communication skills, strong writing ability, comfort with technology, and a proven ability to guide and inspire a team.

  • Salary range for this position is $74,715.36 - $89,658.19/Year. (Salary offered will be based on level of experience, skill sets and education level.)

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this role provides day-to-day supervision and development of the Library's Safety Team, ensuring effective coverage, professional conduct, and timely response to incidents. The Safety Supervisor/Assistant Facilities Manager promotes and enforces safety regulations, trains staff in de-escalation practices and supports a safe and welcoming environment for all patrons and employees. In partnership with the Facilities Manager, the role may also occasionally direct the work of Custodian II staff for event setup, room configuration, and safety support. The role requires frequent interaction with Library employees, supervisors, contractors, and vendors to resolve safety-related concerns, coordinate event support, and contribute to smooth facility operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides direct supervision for safety monitors, indirect supervision of Custodian staff and coordinates activities with security and maintenance operations
  • Oversee daily safety operations, conduct scheduled inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA standards, regulations and Library policies
  • Trains employees in proper safety procedures and protocols and provides coaching and support to staff on conflict resolution, de-escalation, and communication with vulnerable or high-need patrons.
  • Review incident data to identify patterns and recommend preventive measures or policy updates.
  • Prepare monthly reports on safety trends, staff performance, and training outcomes for the Library Board.
  • Use technology to monitor and review security cameras
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies ensuring proper emergency procedures are followed. De-escalate conflicts and serve as a liaison with Evanston Police Department and other public service agencies
  • Conducts proactive outreach to individuals within the library that are unhoused, may have substance use disorders, mental illness and co-occurring disorders, ensuring their needs are addressed. Provide compassionate, trauma-informed services that respect the individual's needs. Document and complete incident reports accurately
  • Administers and maintains the library's incident management and tracking systems/software
  • Assists in developing and implementing a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for Library facilities
  • Coordinates and tracks work orders, building repairs, and contractor projects, monitors building control systems and responds to alarms or building notifications
  • Administers building opening/closing, arming/disarming and emergency call response
  • Collaboration with Facilities Manager on building projects, capital project planning and budget preparation

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree. Master's degree in Security, Risk Management, Public Administration, Sociology, Social Work or related field, .
  • One year's experience in a supervisory or management role within facilities or safety/security operations.
  • Documented experience in training or mentoring staff.
  • Skilled in building rapport with patrons as well as building relationship with internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and restorative justice principles.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills, well-versed in de-escalating high emotional situations
  • Available for a varying Tuesday - Saturday schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to multi-task and manage variable duties
  • Knowledge of workplace technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Must be able to work outside in ambient environmental conditions.
  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Walking and/or standing to a significant degree is normally required.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, climb (stairs, scaffolding, ramps and poles), kneel, crouch, reach, handle and feel.
