
Research Engineer -- Mobile Network Architecture

Nokia Standards targets collaboration with internal and external experts to advance the state-of-the-art technology landscape as well as to protect Nokia Intellectual Property. The Architecture and Management unit is responsible for research and standardization activities related to 5G and 6G cellular network architecture, security and its AI/ML-empowered zero-touch automation. What you will learn and contribute to Nokia Standards is looking for a Research Engineer to join our Architecture, Security, and Automation Group. You will work in one of our teams shaping the evolution of mobile network technologies in 5G-Advanced and towards 6G, developing architecture and protocol solutions. Candidates should have expert knowledge in end-to-end mobile network architectures and strong research skills with outstanding analytical and theoretical capabilities as well as simulation or prototyping experience. Moreover, you are expected to solve complex problems, analyze and substantiate the benefits of developed concepts, and contribute to the standardization of these concepts in 3GPP and other standardization bodies such as ETSI, IETF, BBF. As part of our team, you will: Develop and analyze architecture, feature, and protocol evolution for the 5G and 5G-Advanced core network, ensuring end-to-end coherence of features, including seamless interaction with the 5G radio access network. Pro-actively identify emerging topics in core network and system architecture research, drive internal discussions on technical concepts for 6G, and contribute to collaborative projects funded by national governments or the European Union. Support our standardization work in 3GPP working groups SA2 and CT, including writing 3GPP contributions. Protect the generated intellectual property by patents, contribute to the implementation of patents in standards, review of inventions from others. Develop evaluation methodologies and network models to perform system-level simulations using, e.g., C++, MATLAB, or Python. Your skills and experience MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline. PhD in one of above disciplines, or at least three years of professional experience in mobile network architecture, interfaces, and protocols work. Good knowledge in wireless communication systems in areas of mobile core network, overall system architecture, procedures, and protocols. Knowledge of simulation as a methodology and experience with most common simulation tools (e.g., ns-2, ns-3, MATLAB) and programming languages (e.g., C++, Python). Ability to work autonomously on complex research issues. Good understanding of cloud technologies and trends as well as related requirements is a plus. Knowledge of analytics and machine learning methods is a plus. Personal Attributes Very strong analytical skills and eager to find innovative/disruptive solutions to problems.
