R&D Design Engineer

Main purpose of job:



This position will be responsible for researching and developing concept design for alternative, clean Hydrogen technology and carbon capture. To deliver on mechanical conceptual design and development associated to high temperature pressure vessels and complex machined assemblies. To facilitate and conduct research, design, simulation, and analysis of technologies from concept to manufactured systems ready for testing and commissioning. To support and analyse calculations and data sets for concept design in accordance with the relevant codes and standards. To demonstrate a thorough understanding of the core technology and associated testing regimes. To provide a high level of design authority and sign off over calculations and drawings in accordance with the relevant codes and standards.



To work collaboratively and communicate effectively with mechanical and electrical engineering design teams following all associated health, safety, and environmental procedures. Driving a strong culture and high standards for following design process including design & manufacturing reviews, test programs, stage gate reviews, FMEA, schedule and project management.



To build effective relationships and support through great communication attending regular internal and external interaction with program management, suppliers, and customers on technical projects as well as cross-business interface on common technical issues and challenges.



Responsibilities / Accountabilities:



* Work alongside the R&D team and application Engineering team to conceptualise and develop HiiROC propriety technologies including plasma technologies, pressure vessel design, and complex assemblies supported by Thermo/Fluid dynamic problem solving, material science and complex mechanical problem solving.



* Application of applicable codes and standards, including and not limited to ASME section 8 Div1, Div 2, B31,3, B31.12. Developing solutions and product specifications by analyzing performance and customer specification requirements.



* To investigate design factors such as fit, form and function, materials, performance, interchangeability, cost, operational efficiency, and contractual requirements.



* Takes appropriate steps to protect and safeguard HiiROC intellectual property.



* Performs feasibility and development studies applying standard analytical methods; including FEA and CFD simulations (Ansys/COMSOL) leading to recommendations & solutions which are defined and reviewed for implementation. May utilize and interpret predictive models to simulate and verify design concepts.



* Interprets and validates test results for accuracy and precision. Ensures conformance to product qualification procedures and parameters to achieve customer requirements, life characteristics and safety standards.



* Provides a high level of design authority over technical information for review with product engineering teams and Leadership using established engineering practices, standards, and documentation methods (e.g. structured design process).



* Writes supporting documentation for procedures, process and technical reports; may assist in writing technical report /proposals for customers.



* Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects (e.g. create functional diagram, 3D CAD and system layouts; review detailed drawings and schematics; define data structure, interfaces; analyse material requirements; research customer data item requirements).



* Effective communication across all stakeholders producing the associated documentation and delivering technical presentations (e.g. FMEA, Design calcs, design reviews, stage gate reviews, manufacturing drawings, test requests, test reports, handovers, and safety check protocols etc.). Driving a structured design process



* Supporting the development of engineers, sharing knowledge, skillsets with a collaborative work ethic.



Qualifications:



Essential:



* MEng/MSc in Mechanical Engineering



* BEng in Mechanical Engineering + eight years’ experience



* HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering + 12 years’ experience (Apprenticeship)



Desirable:



* Chartered Engineer



Relevant Experience:



Essential:



* Minimum ten years’ experience in a R&D background.



* Possesses thorough knowledge of the technical engineering discipline or domain, and products, assemblies or systems, good fabrication, precision machining and material knowledge .



* Experience in New Product Design (NPD) programs and innovation .



* Strong communications skills with experience presenting to internal and external customers.



* At least three years’ experience of ANSYS FEA and Ansys Fluent/COMSOL and CAE softwares.



* Experience of working in a laboratory and Test environment supporting test teams and problem solving



* Five years’ experience using Autodesk inventor, vault software.



* Ability to work with general objectives regarding projects and team goals; applies judgment in selecting procedures and techniques that should be applied.



* Works collaboratively in a team environment.



* Ability to effectively communicate status, actions, recommendations, and other technical information with clarity and precision.



Desirable:



* Experience with Multiphase fluid flow models.



* Experience with Species changing simulations.



* Ten years’ experience using Autodesk inventor, vault software.



* Five years’ experience with pressure vessel/piping design.
