R&D Chemist /Regulatory Scientist
Fareva is currently seeking an experienced R&D Chemist/Regulatory Scientist to join our team in Richmond, VA.
Overview
Responsible for stability/compatibility and regulatory compliance relating to cosmetic and OTC drug products developed in in accordance with customer briefs. This is a hybrid position designed to strengthen core R&D competencies.
Job Responsibilities (main tasks)
Related to Regulatory position
- Obtains regulatory documentation from raw material (RM) suppliers and ensures this information is entered into the database and filed as a systematic, organized manner
- Evaluate feasibility of raw material against customer’s restricted substances lists
- Perform regulatory reviews of raw materials for use in USA and Canada; determine any restriction limits
- Provide assessments and present opportunities for alternative raw materials
- Collaborate with R&D Regulatory to follow, interpret and comply with global and regional personal care regulations, plus shipping regulations. Primary focus includes US FDA, US DOT, certain US States, Health Canada, and EU Cosmetic Regulation.
Related to the Chemist position
- Under minimal supervision, complete tasks as directed. Independently complete product development projects from inception (based on customer brief) to scale up to meet launch deadlines including stability and compatibility studies, with support from supervisor as needed,
- Identify raw materials and technologies suitable for product development.
- Able to characterize formulations trials regarding physical-chemical and sensory parameters with support from R&D team.
- Execute under supervision development of pilot batches during development phase for stability/compatibility, micro and customer sample requests.
- Perform product stability/compatibility on all formulas.
- Communicate any formulation and/or stability/compatibility issues to R&D Manager and help with the resolution of such issues.
- Investigate/research problems/issues
- Prepare mandatory documentation such as Bill of Materials (BOM) or Product Design Review (PDR) for all final formulas and provide information to relevant department.
- Help to identify and propose solutions to issues that may arise during the product development or in the transfer to manufacturing.
- Ensure traceability and accuracy of lab trials notes in FAREVA system.

May interface with technical support groups including, R&D, Quality, Technical Transfer, Operations, and Procurement
- May handle multiple projects simultaneously

- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Notes, MS Teams)
- Basic knowledge of applicable IT and R&D laboratory systems such as SAP
Key Experience (Prior to This Position)
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field of science, plus minimum 2 years of related work experience; or master’s degree with 1-3 years of related work experience.
- 2+ years of progressive laboratory experience including or college lab work experience is .
- Knowledge of regulation pertaining to cosmetics and OTC drugs is a nice to have
- Knowledge in Aerosol formulation is a plus.
