Job Title: Quality Engineer (Powder Metal Manufacturing)
Location: Janesville WI
Supervisor: Director of Engineering
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-driven Quality Engineer to support and enhance quality systems and manufacturing processes within our powder metal manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with IATF 16949, customer requirements, and internal standards while partnering closely with engineering, production, and customers.
The Quality Engineer plays a key role in CMM programming and inspection, customer complaint resolution, and continuous improvement initiatives that drive product quality, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Systems & Compliance
- Support and maintain compliance with IATF 16949, customer-specific requirements, and the company internal quality procedures.
- Assist with internal audits, external audits, and corrective action activities.
- Maintain and update quality documentation including Control Plans, PFMEAs, work instructions, and inspection standards.
- Support PPAP activities, including dimensional layouts, capability studies, and submission documentation.
Metrology & Inspection
- Program, operate, and maintain Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) to perform dimensional inspections.
- Develop and revise CMM programs for new product launches and existing powder metal components.
- Analyze inspection data and communicate results to engineering, production, and quality teams.
- Support measurement system analysis (MSA) activities, including GR\&R, and ensure calibration compliance.
Customer Complaints & Corrective Action
- Lead or support investigation and resolution of customer complaints, including root cause analysis.
- Prepare and submit 8D and corrective action reports in accordance with customer timelines.
- Coordinate containment, corrective actions, and verification of effectiveness.
- Serve as a quality liaison between customers, engineering, and manufacturing.
Manufacturing Quality Support
- Support production troubleshooting related to dimensional, cosmetic, or functional issues.
- Assist with first-piece approval, in-process inspection, and final inspection activities.
- Monitor quality metrics and trends to identify improvement opportunities.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on scrap reduction, defect prevention, and process stability.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Quality, Manufacturing, Mechanical, or related field) or equivalent experience.
- 1–2 years of quality engineering or manufacturing quality experience, preferably in an automotive environment.
- Experience working within an IATF 16949 or ISO-based quality system.
- Hands-on experience with CMM programming and operation.
- Working knowledge of quality tools, including:
- o Root cause analysis
- o Corrective action methodologies (8D, 5-Why)
- o Control Plans and PFMEA
- o Basic SPC and MSA concepts
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD\&T.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for internal and customer interactions.
Qualifications
- Experience in powder metal, metal manufacturing, or automotive components.
- Exposure to PPAP submission processes.
- Familiarity with automotive customer requirements and expectations.
- Experience with quality, metrology, or statistical software systems.
