Protection & Controls Technician (Substation Testing & Commissioning)
Location: Nationwide (U.S. – 100% Travel)
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Protection & Controls (P&C) Technician to support substation testing and commissioning projects across the United States. This role is fully travel-based and requires extensive fieldwork supporting new construction, upgrades, and maintenance of high-voltage substations.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in relay testing, control systems, and commissioning activities within utility or EPC environments and be comfortable working in dynamic, fast-paced field conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control systems in substations (up to 765kV or as applicable)
- Conduct functional testing of protective relays, including SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, and other OEM devices
- Execute end-to-end commissioning activities, including:
- Point-to-point wiring checks
- Control circuit verification
- SCADA and communications testing
- Breaker timing and functional checks
- Interpret and work from schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic drawings
- Perform relay settings verification and implementation
- Carry out troubleshooting and diagnostics on P&C systems, resolving issues efficiently in the field
- Support energization and system turn-over activities
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, company procedures, and client requirements
- Document testing results, produce commissioning reports, and maintain accurate field records
- Collaborate with project engineers, utility clients, and field teams to deliver projects on schedule
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in protection & controls, substation testing, or commissioning
- Associate’s degree or technical certification in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field
- Experience working with major utilities or EPC contractors
- Hands-on experience with protective relay testing equipment
- Strong understanding of:
- Substation protection schemes (line, transformer, bus, feeder protection)
- Electrical fundamentals and power systems
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and relay logic
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively (100%)
