The Opportunity
The Project Engineer (PE) supports project management and field operations on commercial, institutional, civil, and multifamily construction projects. This developmental role is designed for career-minded builders to gain a deep understanding of the full construction lifecycle—strengthening technical, coordination, and management skills to advance within the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Preconstruction & Procurement
- Assist with select bids and proposal submissions; review specs, drawings, and scopes thoroughly.
- Support buyout activities, vendor outreach, and long-lead item tracking.
Project Controls & Documentation
- Own document control for RFIs, submittals, as-builts, logs/registers/schedules, change orders, purchase orders, quantity surveys, O&M manuals, and warranties.
- Process shop drawings and manage RFI workflows; track responses and downstream impacts.
- Maintain accurate meeting minutes, action logs, weekly reports, status updates, and photo documentation.
Field Support & Coordination
- Attend site walks and coordination meetings; observe standard practices for subcontractor oversight.
- Support QC/QA, safety observations, and close-out requirements in partnership with field teams.
- Serve as an escort in government facilities when required; adhere to all site PPE standards.
Schedule & Cost Awareness
- Apply foundational scheduling concepts (critical path, long-lead items); draft updates under PM/PE3 guidance.
- Track changes affecting cost and time; assist with forecasting and change management.
Client & Stakeholder Service
- Provide timely, professional responses to client inquiries with PM approval.
- Model customer-service excellence and help foster strong, repeat-business relationships.
Professional Growth
- Seek cross-training and job-sharing with senior PEs; train Level-1 PEs as requested.
- Obtain and maintain relevant construction certifications and trainings.
Other
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support successful project delivery.
Qualifications
Required
- BS in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; or HS diploma and 3+ years of direct commercial construction experience.
- Foundational understanding of construction means and methods for commercial/institutional renovations and site work.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); Adobe; internet research.
- Clear, professional communication skills (written and verbal).
- Reliable transportation; ability to work nights/weekends as project needs require.
- Ability to pass government background checks and drug testing (including random).
- /Co-op experience in GC/CM environments.
- Experience with Procore (strongly ); familiarity with Bluebeam, MS Project/Primavera P6 a plus.
- OSHA-30, CPR/First Aid, USACE CQM, and other construction-related certifications.
- Eligibility to obtain/maintain public trust/HSPD-12 clearance when project-required.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Split between office and active job sites; travel between locations as needed.
- Regular exposure to construction environments (heavy equipment, noise, dust/fumes); strict PPE compliance required.
- Frequent walking/standing; occasional squatting/kneeling; routine review of small print on plans; use of scales/rulers.
- Office temperatures may vary; dress in layers as appropriate.
