Johnson College is seeking a Full-time Program Director for Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology. The Program Director is responsible for providing academic leadership, strategic planning, curriculum oversight, and operational management of the associate degree and certificate programs. The Program Director ensures that all program components meet or exceed industry, institutional, and accreditation standards and prepares students for success in the fields of diesel systems, hydraulics, powertrains, and mobile equipment technologies.
This position will include organizing and delivering class syllabi and objectives clearly and concisely, This person must also maintain an organized and safe lab; ensure training aids, tools, and equipment are maintained and prepared to use in the classroom and labs. They will have to develop curriculum and hands-on training aligned with industry certifications and emerging technologies. They will also need to cultivate partnerships with regional employers and serve as the face of the program to students, faculty, and industry stakeholders. Also, keep accurate records of student performance and make timely submission of academic records while providing students with timely feedback. This role involves instructional quality, faculty support, student advisement, budgeting, and compliance with regulatory bodies such as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The Program Director plays a key role in maintaining the integrity and relevance of the program while fostering a safe and effective learning environment.
The Program Director's responsibilities would also include instructing students in principles and applications. Academic instruction will include classroom lectures and hands-on activities. The ideal candidate should have the ability to speak confidently in front of small crowd, a passion for recruiting into the skilled trades, and flexible hours to include afternoon/evening classes. All teaching positions require, at a minimum, an Associate's degree and/or 4-5 years of technical experience. Prior teaching, training, or leadership experience a technical education setting is but not required for most positions. The Program Director is responsible for managing the program's budget, which encompasses the procurement of tools, equipment, textbooks, and safety materials essential to student training.
Assessment is a critical component of the director's role. The Program Director must implement and monitor assessment practices required by the College and its accrediting bodies to ensure continuous program improvement. They are also responsible for preparing and submitting reports and documentation required by College leadership and external agencies. To maintain accreditation, the Director ensures that the program complies with all guidelines set by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and any applicable state licensing or regulatory bodies.
The candidate should have industry experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, power trains, A/C, and brakes. This program is designed to prepare students for modern, in-demand careers with training in hydraulics, diagnostics, diesel engines, and systems integration.
A significant aspect of the role includes managing the Program Advisory Committee (PAC). This committee, composed of industry professionals, provides input on curriculum updates and ensures the program remains aligned with workforce needs. The Program Director is also responsible for evaluating program faculty and staff, supporting their professional growth, and participating in the hiring process when new instructor are needed.
The director works closely with students by providing academic advising and support to foster retention and student success. In collaboration with the Admissions Office and Marketing Department, the Program Director also participates in recruitment activities, promoting program to prospective students at high schools, career fairs, and community events.
Coordination with the Registrar is essential to ensure accurate scheduling of courses and to facilitate the transferability of coursework when applicable. The Program Director also works to keep resource materials and instructional resources current and relevant to the program. This includes submitting updated textbooks, tools, and parts lists to the resource center in a timely manner each term.
Additionally, the Program Director plays an active role in the campus community by serving on college committees and participating in institutional activities and professional development opportunities. They collaborate with the Continuing Education Department to support workforce initiatives and contribute to articulation agreements with other institutions to enhance student mobility.
Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized learning environment is a continual responsibility. The Program Director ensures that all lab and classroom spaces adhere to health and safety standards and promote effective instruction. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the broader mission and goals of the institution.
We are looking for someone to start this academic year, beginning at the end of August. The position will work from mid-August to mid-May. Individuals must have strong communication skills, the ability to teach, expertise in their program area, good managerial skills, knowledge of industry standards, assessment skills, and organizational and word-processing skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Enforce college policies and procedures with all Diesel and Heavy Equipment instructors and students, within their course of study.
Equipment to be used:
Equipment used in the program of student includes, computer and associated software.
