Location: GM Global Technical Center, Sloan Engineering Center, Michigan
Schedule: Hybrid; onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Shift: 1st shift, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
Assignment Duration: 35 weeks
Openings: 5
Target Start: ASAP

 

JOB SUMMARY

This position supports GM’s Exterior Hardware department as a Product Development Engineer focused on exterior hardware and mechatronic closure components. The role involves leading product development activities, managing engineering issues, coordinating supplier follow-up, supporting change requests, and helping ensure timely hardware release for current and future vehicle programs.

Key Responsibilities

·       Lead regular Product Development Team meetings to manage issues related to exterior hardware mechatronic components

·       Author Engineering Change Requests to update part designs for quality, cost, and timing improvements

·       Track warranty concerns and support actions to reduce warranty exposure associated with assigned parts

·       Follow up with suppliers and GM personnel to ensure deliverables, timing targets, and issue-resolution actions are completed on schedule

·       Support root-cause analysis and problem solving for current product concerns

·       Coordinate release activities across vehicle programs for closure hardware, including front, rear, and side closure applications

·       Interact with program teams and program managers to ensure proper and timely hardware release

 

TEAM AND BUSINESS CONTEXT

The Exterior Hardware team supports Design Release Engineering activities across several commodities, including handles and latches, closure hardware integration, and wiper systems. The team works across current and future vehicle programs and collaborates closely with suppliers, program teams, engineering teams, and managers to support release timing, quality improvements, and issue resolution.

 

Typical Day and Team Interaction

The engineer will work closely with a team of approximately 10–15 engineers and interact regularly with program teams, program managers, suppliers, and other GM stakeholders. Daily responsibilities include managing open action items, supporting release timing, resolving product and supplier issues, and coordinating across functional areas to keep exterior hardware deliverables on track.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·       Education: Bachelor of Science in Engineering required; this is a hard requirement with no exceptions.

·       Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

·       Technical knowledge: Product design, Microsoft Office Suite, DFMEA, GD&T, DFSS, and GM change management systems .

·       experience: Vehicle closures experience, including side doors, front/rear closures, and tailgates.

·       Soft skills: Strong communication, ability to work across functional areas, quick learning ability, and experience navigating system interactions across assignments.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

1.       Microsoft Office Suite experience

2.       Product development experience

3.       Knowledge of GM systems , but not required
