POSITION PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Process & Safety Chemical Engineer role is focused on supporting the safe and efficient production of explosives and packaged products by the Red Diamond Plant which consists of multiple areas including Detonating Cord, Packaged Emulsions and Bulk Emulsion, ANFO and Mixed Emulsion, Boosters, and PETN Plant. A combination of process safety activities and production support activities make up this role. The position reports primarily to SHES management to ensure a safety focus while supporting production of assigned areas at the Red Diamond Plant to drive continuous improvement.
Safety focus for the Process & Safety Chemical Engineer includes documentation and analysis to support the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) program including management of change, process hazard analysis, pre-startup safety reviews, incident investigations and updating documentation such as operating instructions, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, etc.
Production focus of the role will involve working alongside operations to learn and understand the process flow, safe procedures, and production goals. The Process & Safety Chemical Engineer will assist in troubleshooting for operational issues while scoping and working on long-term improvements in all areas of operation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Learn and implement Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements to support the production processes including Management of Change (MOCs) and maintaining standard operating procedures.
- Support production areas by training and learning the process areas assigned.
- Assist operations in troubleshooting.
- Update and improve site operating procedures and policies including training for employees.
- Complete any unplanned event incident notifications for areas of plant
- Assist in and lead incident investigations with root cause analysis and complete detailed investigation reports
- Maintain and report Safety and Production Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for plant areas assigned.
- Implement long-term improvements in safety and operation through procedures, process, automation, or equipment upgrades.
- Champion Pre-Startup Safety Reviews for assigned areas and follow-up on validating changes in the process.
- Assist in maintaining plant process safety information such as flow diagrams, P&ID's, mass balances, electrical classification, drawings, etc.
- Learn the fundamentals of process safety for manufacturing.
- Learn Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) methodologies and complete PHAs for existing and new processes, performing hazard studies and risk assessments.
- Manage and/or assist with small to medium capital projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Process Safety Management required
- S. in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree
- This is an entry level position, and any applicable industry experience is a plus
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and any other analytical or statistical tools
- Ability to perform work in a manufacturing environment which includes ascending and descending stairs and ladders
- Willing to travel up to 10% for training and other Austin Powder site visits
