Process Engineer – Electrolyser Specialist
The organisation is seeking a Process Engineer / Electrolyser Specialist to act as the technical authority for electrolyser technology across all phases of a major industrial hydrogen project, from early concept and FEED through EPC execution, commissioning, and operational readiness.
Reporting to the Project Manager responsible for water treatment and electrolysis systems, the role serves as the central technical reference for electrolyser-related matters, ensuring technical consistency, integration, and performance across the full project lifecycle.
The position works closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team, including process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation & control specialists, to enable coherent decision-making and effective interface management. Acting as the primary technical counterpart to equipment suppliers and engineering contractors, the role leads technical reviews, challenges assumptions, and ensures that solutions are safe, operable, robust, and cost-effective.
Location: Major European engineering hub, with periodic travel to project sites and engineering partner offices.
Key Responsibilities 1) Electrolyser OEM Coordination & Technical Governance
-
Act as the internal subject-matter expert for all interactions with electrolyser manufacturers.
-
Lead and participate in technical design reviews with OEMs and engineering partners.
-
Review and challenge supplier design documentation and performance guarantees.
-
Ensure compliance with applicable European regulations, codes, and industry standards.
2) Process Design & System Integration
-
Lead all process interfaces between the electrolyser systems and balance-of-plant facilities, including utilities, cooling, water treatment, compression, and hydrogen storage.
-
Develop, review, and maintain process documentation for the hydrogen production facility in coordination with the broader engineering team.
-
Identify and drive value engineering and cost optimisation opportunities in process design, layout, and utility integration, balancing technical performance with lifecycle costs.
-
Support resolution of technical and interface issues in collaboration with OEMs and engineering contractors.
-
Contribute to configuration and change management by ensuring all process design changes are properly assessed, justified, approved, and documented.
3) Project Execution & Technical Support
-
Provide process engineering leadership throughout FEED, EPC, and commissioning phases.
-
Review engineering contractor deliverables to ensure alignment with the overall process philosophy and electrolyser integration requirements.
-
Act as the process SME for safety and operability studies, including HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, and related reviews.
-
Support commissioning preparation, start-up strategies, and transition to operations.
4) Safety, Quality & Performance
-
Promote and embed process safety principles throughout the design and execution phases, ensuring compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements.
-
Monitor and assess electrolyser performance indicators, including efficiency, hydrogen quality, energy consumption, reliability, and availability.
-
Contribute to lessons-learned processes and continuous improvement of technical standards and specifications.
Candidate Profile Education
-
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering.
Professional Experience
-
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in hydrogen and/or electrolysis-related industries (excluding internships).

-
Results-driven, proactive, and capable of working under the guidance of senior technical and project leadership.
-
High level of attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
-
Clear and effective communicator, able to explain complex technical topics to diverse stakeholders.
-
Proven ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional and multidisciplinary project teams.
