Our client is seeking a Principal Superconducting Systems Engineer to lead the design, development, and testing of low-loss, high-ampacity, high-temperature superconductor (HTS)-based power cables and their subsystems. In this role, you will take ownership of key HTS subsystem development efforts and play a critical part in advancing innovative power transmission solutions.You Are:

  • Experienced with HTS Systems: You bring a strong experimental and modeling background, with expertise in evaluating the performance of systems utilizing high-temperature superconductors. Experience with HTS tape is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering expertise for high-temperature superconducting cables in power transmission applications.
  • Lead the iterative design, construction, and testing of low-loss AC/DC power cables and associated testbeds.
  • Analyze experimental data, validate and refine designs, and strategize subsequent prototype iterations and testing campaigns.
  • Develop and utilize engineering analysis techniques, models, and simulations to enhance the performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of HTS-based power cables and related subsystems.
  • Oversee lab activities within the Superconducting Systems Team, ensuring high standards in testing and experimentation.
  • Mentor junior engineers, fostering a high-performance team culture and work processes.
  • Evaluate HTS material from vendors and establish methods for material characterization and quality acceptance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate HTS cable designs with broader engineering efforts, including thermal and high-voltage systems.
  • Identify, evaluate, negotiate, and liaise with suppliers, academic collaborators, and consultants.
  • Document innovations and support the patent application process for key technological developments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or physics with 8+ years of experience working with high-temperature superconducting systems.
  • Proven expertise in testing HTS systems, including cables, magnets, and generators.
  • Hands-on experience in electrical characterization of high-current conductors and cables.
  • Skilled in integrating sensors and data collection systems with cryogenic testbeds.
  • Proficient in interpreting experimental results and correlating them with model predictions.
  • Experience with laboratory automation and data collection systems, such as LabView.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or applied physics with 12+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong background in the analytical design and experimental testing of low-loss, high-ampacity AC/DC HTS power cables.
  • Demonstrated success in commercializing products utilizing high-temperature superconductors.
  • Proficiency in Python, COMSOL, and CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks).

Expected Outcomes:

  • 3 Months: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the client’s technology, design specifications, constraints, and testing and modeling techniques for HTS-based power cables.
  • 6-12 Months: Take full ownership of experimental efforts to advance the development of HTS-based power transmission cables.
