Job Description

Principal Structural Engineer – Derby\n£55,000 - £65,000 | Derby (Hybrid)\n\nThe Opportunity\n\nAn established structural engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to join its Derby office. This is a senior technical role offering the chance to take ownership of a varied portfolio of projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the growth and success of a dynamic design team.\n\nThe office undertakes projects ranging from multi-storey commercial structures to small residential schemes, with construction values from approximately £250,000 up to £30M. Many projects are delivered to BIM Level 2, using modern design tools alongside traditional hand calculations.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\n * Lead the structural design of projects using steel, timber, masonry and reinforced concrete, incorporating sound geotechnical principles\n\n * Prepare technical drawings and calculations using AutoCAD and industry-standard software such as TEDDS, TEKLA, CSC Portal Frame Designer\n\n * Review and quality-assure designs from concept through to construction\n\n * Mentor and support junior engineers, helping them achieve professional accreditation (ICE or IStructE)\n\n * Communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams, both verbally and in writing\n\n * Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high technical standards\n\nAbout You\n\nThe ideal candidate will have:\n\n * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering\n\n * Significant consultancy experience at Principal or Senior Structural Engineer level\n\n * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills\n\n * Proficiency with AutoCAD and familiarity with TEDDS, TEKLA, CSC Portal Frame Designer (or willingness to learn)\n\n * A collaborative team ethic while also able to work independently\n\n * Excellent organisational, communication and presentation skills\n\n * Ambition to develop their career and support the professional development of others\n\nChartered status (or working towards chartership) is , but support will be provided for the right candidate to achieve professional accreditation.\n\nWhat’s on Offer\n\n * Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications\n\n * Flexible working hours, with hybrid working available following probation\n\n * Industry-standard holiday allowance\n\n * Exposure to technically interesting projects across the East Midlands and UK\n\n * Career development and training opportunities within a supportive environment\n\nThis is an excellent opportunity for a Principal Structural Engineer looking to progress their career, work on a diverse range of projects, and play a key role in mentoring and developing a talented team in Derby
