Principal Electrical Engineer – Analog/Digital/Power Electronics

Position Summary:
PDC is seeking a
Principal Analog / Mixed Signal Design Engineer
experienced in developing devices with active and passive signal conditioning & conversion, switching power control, driver, and filter circuits, that are implemented using chip & wire hybrid, or SMT-CCA construction.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide primary technical leadership in the design, management, and support for our motion control product lines, including:
Synchro / Resolver to Digital converters
DATEL A to D, and D to A converters
Switch-mode multi-phase Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) drivers & controllers
Require a deep understanding of analog / mixed signal circuit analysis and design techniques to meet demanding specifications for dynamic range, EMI, noise, and power. Lead our interdisciplinary engineering team through all phases of product development, from requirements to manufacturing support. Support product obsolescence review and redesign to assist our military & aerospace customers in managing product lifecycle.
Extract clear requirements from marketing and customer inputs, and engage early with customers to guide requirements towards high-value, realizable products.
Develop innovative analog & digital hardware solutions, considering patent opportunities to secure competitive advantage.
Generate reports, present findings, and provide continuous feedback to the team, emphasizing good communication.
Optimize complex design tradeoffs considering cost, performance, features, time to market, and technical risk.
Follow a defined design process, coordinate technical reviews, and facilitate good DFM outcomes.
Manage support and verification activities to ensure all requirements are met, including thermal, electrical stress, worst-case, FMEA, tolerance, aging, and EMI analyses.
Develop project plans, budgets, and schedules; identify resources; and develop contingency plans to mitigate risks.
Provide technical guidance and cost estimates to support proposals.
Mentor and train engineers to enhance their technical and professional skills.
Support legacy product lines and resolve vendor material or product issues as they arise.
Investigate new methods, processes, and technologies to improve quality, timeliness, and efficiency.
Conduct technical interviews and make hiring recommendations to strengthen the engineering team.
Qualifying Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; Graduate degree .
Extensive experience in Analog Circuit design, including multiple A to D architectures (multi-pass SAR, Flash, Sigma Delta, Pipeline) and D to A (serial DACs, R2R, current steering, charge scaling).
Expertise in low noise, high dynamic range techniques, sample acquisition circuits, Bandgap references, oscillators, VCOs, Op-amps, switched capacitor circuits, active filters, and PCB design for low noise, EMI, and high current.
Knowledge of control loops, including Type 2 control, resolver to digital conversion, and phase/frequency control, with analysis in time and frequency domains.
Understanding of sensors/detectors such as inductive, Hall, optical, LVDT, Synchro/Resolvers, and Encoders.
Proficiency with CAD tools like LT-Spice, P-Spice, OrCAD, Allegro, and Pantheon.
Experience in analog/mixed signal ASIC design and verification using Cadence, Synopsys, or Siemens tools is a plus.
Knowledge of power electronics and power management (Buck/Boost, LDO, Charge Pump, Inverters using MOSFET, IGBT, SiC, and GaN devices).
Experience in motor control system simulation and space-level radiation-hardened circuit design, including rad-hard testing, ionizing radiation, single event upset, and total dose analysis.
High-level understanding of thermal management, electrical stress, worst-case analysis, FMEA, tolerance, aging, and EMI considerations.
