Principal Electrical Engineer | Renewable Energy | Boston, MA or Houston, TX
The Opportunity
Role: Principal Electrical Engineer
Location: Boston, MA or Houston, TX
I'm working with a major renewable energy organization looking to add a Principal Electrical Engineer to its engineering team.
This is a senior technical position focused on the electrical infrastructure behind large-scale renewable energy projects. The engineer will support projects across solar, wind, and battery storage, with particular emphasis on high-voltage systems, power systems design, and grid interconnection.
The role offers exposure across the full project lifecycle, from early-stage technical evaluation and design through construction, commissioning, and operating assets. It is well suited to someone who has spent significant time in utility-scale power and is comfortable acting as the technical lead on complex electrical engineering matters.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead and review electrical engineering work for utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Provide technical expertise around HV electrical systems, substations, power systems, and grid interconnection.
- Review engineering drawings, electrical studies, design packages, and technical reports produced internally and by third-party engineering partners.
- Support projects during development, detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations.
- Evaluate electrical designs and identify technical risks, design issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Work alongside project development, construction, operations, and other engineering disciplines to resolve complex technical issues.
- Support technical assessments of prospective renewable energy projects and assets.
- Contribute electrical engineering expertise to permitting, project specifications, procurement processes, and contractor scopes.
- Support regulatory and reliability-related engineering activities, including applicable NERC requirements.
- Coordinate with external engineering firms, utilities, EPC contractors, OEMs, and other technical partners.
- Establish and maintain strong engineering and quality standards across projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers while serving as a senior point of contact for electrical engineering questions.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; an advanced degree is a plus.
- Approximately 12+ years of electrical engineering or power systems experience.
- Significant hands-on experience with power systems design.
- At least 5 years of experience within renewable energy, ideally supporting utility-scale generation or storage projects.
- Strong knowledge of high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical infrastructure.
- Experience with substations, transformers, protection and controls, electrical balance of plant, and grid-connected generation.
- Strong understanding of utility interconnection processes and requirements.
- Experience reviewing electrical design packages and engineering studies.
- Exposure to the construction, commissioning, or operation of power generation assets.
- Understanding of applicable power generation standards, reliability requirements, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with power system modeling or simulation tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerFactory, NEPLAN, or comparable software.
- AutoCAD familiarity is beneficial.
- PE licensure is preferred but not required.
- Ability to independently lead complex technical work and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel periodically for project meetings and site support.
Who This Could Be a Fit For
This opportunity could be a strong match for someone currently working as a Principal Electrical Engineer, Lead Electrical Engineer, Senior Electrical Engineer, Power Systems Engineer, Substation Engineer, or Engineering Technical Lead within renewable energy, utilities, power generation, or an engineering consultancy.
The strongest candidates will combine deep electrical engineering expertise with practical experience taking large-scale generation projects from design and interconnection through construction and operation.
