Postdoctoral Associate: Engineering Assistant to Project Director

Position Summary Dr. Jeffery Higginbotham in the in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to work on a Engelke Family Foundation funded project. You will research the talk-in-interactions of individuals with complex communication needs (e.g., ALS, CP, IDD) and collaborate on the design Augmentative Communication Technologies that reduce the temporal-sequential problems associated with their use. You will engage in fieldwork, collect and analyze social interaction videos, research the literature for potential interaction-based technical solutions, and collaborate on new AAC designs. You will also assist in training student researchers and other collaborators in human factors, human computer interaction and technology design issues.Summary of Duties Engage in fieldwork collecting video materials on interactions involving individuals with complex communication needs.Perform micro analytic analyses of videoed interactions for Converse projectEngage in coding and fabrication of novel AAC technologiesResearch the Engineering, computer science and or rehab engineering literature for ways to leverage assistive communication technologies to be more conversationally responsive and promote the user’s agency.Collaborate with project staff in designing a new augmentative communication technologies.Train other students and researchers in micro analysis and conversation analysis. Minimum Qualifications PhD in computer science or engineering. Preferred Qualifications Specialty in industrial engineering, human factors, human-computer Interaction and/or rehabilitation engineering.A strong disciplinary background in technology and assistive communication technologies.Experience in interaction coding and analysis is helpful but not necessary.Previous fieldwork experience researching and/or working with individuals with disabilities preferred.The candidate must have excellent written and verbal skills.
