Protection & Controls Engineer (Relay Settings)

A leading engineering consultancy is seeking a skilled Protection & Controls Engineer to support the development, review, and implementation of protective relay settings across transmission and distribution networks.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on complex power system projects, contributing to the reliability and safety of critical infrastructure. The role suits someone with strong analytical capability, a solid grounding in protection philosophies, and hands-on experience in relay settings and coordination studies.

The position is office-based in the United States with occasional travel to project sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out protective relaying studies including short-circuit modelling, coordination studies, CT and PT sizing, and arc flash analysis

  • Develop and produce relay settings and associated reports for transmission, distribution, and generation systems

  • Ensure all deliverables comply with relevant industry and utility standards

  • Maintain accurate and organised technical documentation including settings files and study reports

  • Analyse system disturbances and validate protection system performance

  • Provide remote and on-site support for relay testing and commissioning activities

  • Review protection one-line diagrams and schematic drawings

  • Assess and review vendor technical documentation

  • Support development of technical specifications and design inputs

  • Contribute to technical proposals and engineering cost estimates

  • Perform quality checks on work completed by other engineers

  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure delivery aligns with scope and schedule

  • Continue developing technical knowledge and skills in protection and control systems

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution

Certifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licence in the United States preferred

  • Ability to obtain additional state licences if required

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Protection and Controls relay settings within the power industry

  • Experience working with modern protective relay technologies (for example SEL, Eaton, Beckwith or similar)

  • Exposure to substation design or conceptual engineering is advantageous

Skills

  • Strong understanding of transmission and substation protection schemes

  • Experience with power system analysis tools such as ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, or similar software

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capability

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Strong organisational and time management skills
