Job Description

My client is seeking a skilled Optical Systems Engineer to join their growing team in Edinburgh. You’ll design, build, and optimise free-space and fibre-coupled optical systems for next- communication and sensing technologies.

This is an on-site, hands-on, lab-based role, ideal for someone who enjoys experimental optics, precision alignment, and bringing complex systems to life.

What You’ll Do

• Design and model optical systems in Zemax
• Build and align free-space setups (lenses, mirrors, telescopes)
• Implement beam steering with FSMs and gimbals
• Optimise beam shaping and fibre coupling
• Capture and analyse data in Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW
  
  

Must Have

• Strong practical optics experience in the lab
• Zemax modelling skills, designing lense assemblies
• Hands-on lab alignment expertise
• Knowledge of beam steering, shaping, and fibre coupling
• Right to work in the UK
  
  

Good To Have

• Experience with interferometers and polarisation control
• Automation and lab scripting experience
