Operations Engineer in Mentor

Job DescriptionJob Description

Job Summary

Sunset Industries has been manufacturing and assembling high-precision components for more than 66 years across the Aerospace, Nuclear, and Industrial markets. We have a strong reputation for quality and customer service. The 26,000 sqft facility and production area are very clean and air conditioned located in Mentor, OH.

We are seeking an Operations Engineer to lead operational improvement and digital transformation projects across our facility. This is a hands-on, project-driven role designed for someone early in their engineering career (1–5 years of experience) or looking to enter a new role. This position is great for someone who is interested in working at the intersection of manufacturing, technology, and process improvement.

To be effective, the Operations Engineer will spend meaningful time on the shop floor learning how work actually flows through the business. Early on, the Operations Engineer will receive grounded exposure to company workflows through supporting day-to-day production tasks (inspection, assembly, shipping and receiving, light manufacturing tasks, etc.). This exposure is intentional and essential to making smart, practical improvements.

Once onboarded, the primary focus of the role will be owning and executing operational projects end-to-end, from scoping through implementation.

Key Responsibilities

Operational & Digital Improvement Projects

  • Lead operational improvement initiatives with full ownership from concept to implementation
  • Learn and deeply understand Sunset’s end-to-end workflows across production, quality, scheduling, and ERP
  • Own ERP-related improvement efforts, including:
    • Cleaning and standardizing data in JobBOSS2
    • Improving scheduling workflows and building toward a digital scheduling system
    • Supporting downstream tools such as quoting and reporting that depend on clean ERP data
  • Support the inspection and quality system improvement project, including:
    • General digitization of inspection processes
    • Supporting adoption of Net-Inspect, CMM workflows, and semi-automated inspection reporting
  • Provide implementation support for CMMC Level 2 compliance initiatives, including:
    • Translating requirements into practical shop-floor and system processes
    • Coordinating with third-party IT providers when needed
  • Identify inefficiencies, gaps, and misuse of existing systems and propose practical, scalable solutions
  • Use data to inform decisions and track the impact of improvements over time

Production & Shop-Floor Support

  • Support general production tasks as needed to stay connected to real workflows, including:
    • Basic inspection support
    • Light assembly, deburring, packing, and shipping support
    • Assisting at production bottlenecks when required
  • Work closely with machinists, inspectors, and production staff to understand constraints and realities on the floor
  • Apply insights from hands-on work directly into improvement projects

(These tasks are not technically complex and are intended to build process understanding and to support bottlenecks in production - not to replace full-time production roles.)

Reporting & Authority

  • Reports directly to the operations lead overseeing company-wide improvement initiatives
  • Operates with significant autonomy
  • Authorized to redesign processes and workflows, with collaboration and final sign-off as appropriate
  • Expected to lead projects independently while working cross-functionally with the team

Qualifications

Required

  • U.S. Person as defined by ITAR requirements
  • Experience: 1–5 years experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Working understanding of manufacturing operations and shop-floor workflows
  • Familiarity with ERP systems in a manufacturing setting (JobBOSS² experience a plus, not required)
  • Strong comfort with digital tools and ability to quickly learn new software systems
  • Ability to identify inefficiencies and think systematically about process improvement
  • Willingness to work hands-on in production environments as needed
  • Strong work ethic and reliability
  • Willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

Nice-to-Have

  • Exposure to quality systems, inspections, or regulated environments
  • Experience with data analysis, reporting, or workflow automation
  • Familiarity with AI tools or interest in experimenting with AI where value is clear
  • Prior involvement in compliance, digital transformation, or continuous improvement projects

Why this role is different

  • Real ownership of meaningful projects early in your career
  • Direct access to decision-makers
  • Opportunity to shape how a manufacturing company operates for years to come
  • Balanced mix of hands-on work and engineering problem-solving
  • Clear growth path into more senior operations or engineering leadership roles

This is a long‐term opportunity for someone looking to build a career in manufacturing operations while helping shape the future of Sunset Industries. If you’re motivated, adaptable, and ready to take on real responsibility, we encourage you to apply.
