Motion Control Electrical Engineer
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescriptionTurion Space is building spacecraft for security and in-space operations. From debris removal to space domain awareness to building a more secure space economy, we are a team focused on getting real hardware to orbit fast and scaling capability.
We are looking for an Electrical Engineer to take ownership of hardware design and testing for our spacecraft platforms and payloads. In this role, you will lead the design and development of high-reliability electrical systems and PCBs used in space — and work as part of a fast-moving, cross-disciplinary engineering team.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll drive designs from concept through testing and flight. You’ll have broad ownership and will be expected to learn quickly, contribute across disciplines, and help us deliver mission-ready hardware.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-reliability electrical systems and PCBs for spacecraft platforms and payloads
- Drive full lifecycle of electrical design: requirements definition, component selection, schematic capture, prototyping, bring-up, debugging, manufacturing, and test
- Own and troubleshoot complex PCB designs; perform root cause analysis to component level
- Lead motor control electronics design and firmware development for mechanical space systems
- Design and implement motor/motion control firmware for BLDC and stepper motors
- Perform and document design verification testing for developed systems
- Prepare fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, BOMs, and design transfer documentation
- Maintain accurate requirements and design documentation throughout the system lifecycle
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, manufacturing, test, and supply chain teams
- Support on-orbit operations as a subject matter expert for electrical systems
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- 5 years of experience in hardware development, PCB board design/layout, and electronic system prototyping/validation
- Advanced proficiency with schematic capture tools (Altium )
- Hands-on lab experience using oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, logic analyzers, etc.
- Strong technical fundamentals and creativity in hardware design
- Experience designing motor control electronics and developing motor/motion control firmware
- Familiarity with BLDC and stepper motor commutation (Clarke-Park transforms, SVM)
- Familiarity with cascaded/feedforward PI control loops for motion control
- Experience implementing motor control on microcontroller and/or FPGA hardware
- Experience designing switching power supplies
- Excellent technical documentation and communication skills
- Must be able to obtain a Secret and/or TS/SCI security clearance
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Passion for space and interest in electronics for high-reliability space applications
- Excitement for making systems smarter, better, faster, and more efficient
- Experience building new hardware platforms vs. incremental updates to legacy hardware
- Experience with circuit simulation tools (LTSpice or similar)
- Experience with common interface protocols (SPI, I2C, CAN, RS-422, UART, Ethernet, etc.)
- Ability to develop and deliver hardware on aggressive timelines with limited resources
