Computer Science Programming or Controls Automation Engineer (PLC / HMI – Rockwell & Siemens)

Level: Mid–Senior
Industry Focus: Oil & Gas | Water & Wastewater | Chemical Processing
Location: Houston, TX or Englewood, CO
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

We are seeking a mid-to-senior level Programmer/ Controls Engineer with strong expertise in industrial automation, process control, and system integration using Rockwell Automation and Siemens platforms. The successful candidate will design, develop, and commission control systems across a range of industrial projects in oil & gas, water/wastewater treatment, and chemical processing environments.

This role involves taking ownership of the entire automation lifecycle — from conceptual design through commissioning and support — while collaborating with cross-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities

· Design, program, and commission PLC and HMI systems using Rockwell (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk View SE/ME) and Siemens (S7-1200/1500, TIA Portal, WinCC) platforms.

· Develop control logic, interlocks, and PID control strategies for continuous and batch processes.

· Configure and integrate VFDs, instrumentation, and SCADA systems using industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, and Profinet.

· Collaborate with process and electrical engineers on control system architecture, I/O design, and P&ID integration.

· Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and field commissioning at client sites.

· Prepare technical documentation including control narratives, I/O lists, cause & effect matrices, and user manuals.

· Troubleshoot, optimize, and upgrade existing control systems to improve safety, reliability, and performance.

· Ensure all control systems comply with industry standards (ISA, NFPA 70, IEC 61131-3) and site safety requirements.

Qualifications Education & Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or related discipline.

· 5–10 years of hands-on experience in PLC/HMI development and process automation.

· Demonstrated experience with Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk View) and Siemens (TIA Portal, S7, WinCC) systems.

· Proven background in oil & gas, water treatment, or chemical plant automation projects.

· Proficiency in control panel design, network configuration, and industrial instrumentation.

Skills

· Familiarity with PlantPAx DCS, Siemens PCS 7, or other distributed control systems.

· Experience with SCADA, historians (FactoryTalk Historian, PI), and data integration.

· Understanding of functional safety (SIL-rated systems) and safety PLCs.

· Strong ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, and electrical schematics.

· Excellent communication, documentation, and analytical problem-solving skills.

Personal Attributes

· Self-motivated and proactive in solving technical challenges.

· Able to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.

· Willingness to travel for site commissioning and client support (approximately 10–25%).

· Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Compensation & Benefits

· Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

· Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.

· Paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave.

· Professional development, training, and certification opportunities.
