Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
Department: Laboratory FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Laboratory Supervisor
Position Summary
Obtain, labels and delivers patient specimens, ensuring accurate identification and assisting in timely reporting of laboratory results. Performs various clinical testing including chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Demonstrates a commitment to cost effectiveness and to customer satisfaction by establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships, by promoting professionalism and by communicating effectively. Promotes a safe work environment. Performs a variety of support functions (i.e.: preventive maintenance, phone, clerical, computer, etc.). The Medical Laboratory Technician will report to authorized personnel, to include the Medical Laboratory Scientist and the Laboratory Supervisor.
Essential Functions
Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection, test analysis, reporting and record keeping.
Adhere to laboratory quality control standards and policies, including documentation of all quality control values and activities.
Perform instrument calibration/recalibration as indicated by test and/or instrument specification with appropriate documentation.
Perform analyzer maintenance with appropriate documentation as indicated by analyzer specification.
Maintains competency in all assigned work areas of testing in the laboratory and perform proficiency testing as required to a minimal level of 80%.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the Laboratory Supervisor.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
Participate in the Laboratory Quality Improvement Program for CCMSD in such a manner as to improve the quality of care rendered to clients served by CCMSD.
Education
Must possess an Associates of Science in Medical Technology, Applied Science or Equivalent.
Must possess or obtain ASCP registry or equivalent as MLT.
Experience
Experience involving the use of clinical information programs .
Experience with varied laboratory instrumentation .
Experience with varied phlebotomy skills .
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent patient care skills, professional and discrete manner at all times.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work as a team player or independently.
Ability to work with and serve a variety of personalities in a calm professional manner.
Ability to work under stress of responding to critical draw requests in a trauma, within a short response time.
Must possess communication skills appropriate for direct contact with patients, supervisory staff, guests and other hospital personnel.
Hours of Work
Week Days/Rotating On Call for all other hours to maintain 24 hour coverage.
